There is a new healthy restaurant in Plano that is bursting at the seams with healthy menu options under 600 calories… but how does it taste? Being the latest addition to the chain of restaurants dedicated to you “Loving your food everyday”, LYFE Kitchen in Plano makes the 11th of (current and future total) 15 restaurants opened by the restaurant chain. The restaurant is the third restaurant in the local DFW area.
LYFE Kitchen is set up deli counter style. Order at the counter, and a waitress brings the food to your table. First walking in, the restaurant is set up luxuriously, with leather couch seating instead of booths, and it has a lovely water fountain that even pours fresh sparkling water. The tables have sea salt and fresh ground pepper shakers, as well as Stevia and Sugar in the Raw for those iced tea drinkers. It gives off quite an outdoorsy vibe. There is a living wall, which boasts of fresh seasonings such as rosemary, basil, and thyme.
Sure, it looks nice, but what about the food?
The bad news comes first. The food is chain, which means that it cannot be changed from its original state. When asked, even the manager of the restaurant can only bring you something else if your food is not up to expectations. So, if custom is your forte for lunch, then this may not be for you. There are, however, five menus to choose from. If it is hard enough to choose from one menu, then five is so overwhelming that people might just turn around and walk out. One couple did after barely glancing at the first menu in the caddy. Next on the negative list is some of the food is very spicy. So, if you have a spice grudge for chili heat on your pallet, ask before you order if it is spicy because the heat is around a 3-4 on the 1 – 5 Thai chili or Indian curry scale. The last negative is that there are no naughty options. With every good healthy diet, there should be at least one cheat day meal where you can indulge in a good bad choice that won’t break your diet budget forever. Sometimes a girl just wants to be bad.
Now for the good news, and there is plenty of that, too. They have fresh, flavorful menu items that are perfect for the local dieter on a busy lunch break. Their meals are hearty. That means non-bird bites for those that have a little heftier appetite, which is most people. Their food is hot and fresh. Not everyone has a meal planner or has time to pre-make their meals, so this brings to Plano a very valuable option for the dieter on the go, leaving the microwave behind at the office to mope. This also squeezes out some of the competition that only offers cold meals that need to be heated. Loads of diet choices are available with meal offerings for Gluten free diets, Vegans, nut allergies, and those who just want to eat healthy, every item on their menu is under 600 calories. Even the “Unfried Chicken” which was a little spicy, but still quite delicious was still under 600 calories. They are set up to cater to families, too, and have a good children’s menu. The children’s chicken strips are large, lightly breaded, non-spicy, and quite delicious. So if you want the “Unfried Chicken” sans the spice, just order the kids meal, twice. The fruit cup that comes with it has a wider selection of fruit than the usual grapes and apples, offering fresh blackberries, strawberries and blueberries for your little one to get their omega 3’s. The setup is perfect for a business lunch, or a quick tasty bite for dinner as well. The entire menu offers a wide variety to chose from, from burgers to Thai food.
Ranking this restaruant on a scale of “hide your fork” to “standing ovation”, it would come in at a “tasty try”. For one adult and one child, the cost is around $21 with drinks.
