Ashley’s Eckstein’s Her Universe, Hot Topic, and Nerdist Industries joined forces to present the first-ever Her Universe Fashion Show on July 25, 2014. This dazzling and inspiring event took place at the Grand Hyatt Hotel Harbor Ballroom amidst the hullaballoo of San Diego Comic-Con.
Budding designers presented 36 different “geek couture” outfits inspired by various realms of fandom ranging from “Doctor Who” to Marvel Comics. Judging the out-of-this world creations were Chloe Dykstra (“Heroes of Cosplay”), vlogger Justine Ezarik, dazzling designer Tarina Tarantino, Hot Topic Senior VP of Merchandising and Marketing Cindy Levitt, plus comedic sister duo Hilly and Hannah Hindi of “The Hillywood Show.” Lucasfilm executives Tara Sinclair and Lacey Prince rounded out the panel.
These esteemed judges selected Amy Beth Christenson’s “Back to the Future”-inspired “Great Skirt, Marty.” Audience members got in on the action, too. Their chosen one: Andrew MacLaine’s “Regina’s Curse” based on ABC’s “Once Upon a Time.”
In a press release issued by Her Universe, Eckstein reveled: “Geek Couture has officially invaded San Diego Comic Con! Last night was truly a celebration of the Fangirl culture and geek fashion,” said actress, Her Universe Founder and Fashion Show Host, Ashley Eckstein. “The feeling in the room was absolutely electric! All of the designs blew me away!”
Eckstein herself modeled an adorable, kawaii-inspired “My Neighbor Totoro” gown designed and made by Catherine Elhoffer of Elhoffer Design. Fans of the animation master Hayao Miyazaki (“Ponyo,” “My Neighboro Totoro,” “Spirited Away”) rejoiced in Eckstein’s proclamation that Her Universe and Miyazaki’s Studio Ghibli are collaborating on an “exclusive line of Her Universe fangirl merchandise to be sold exclusively at Hot Topic.”
Capping off the night, attendees were treated to a performance by Maryland’s pop punk ensemble All Time Low.
