The final day of the Goodwood Festival of Speed did not disappoint spectators who were treated to more hill climb action by stars of motor sport. According to a press release from Goodwood on Sunday, June 29, three of the many stars on hand to show off their stuff on Sunday were current Formula 1 drivers Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes and Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen with retired motorcycle and Formula 1 champion, John Surtees.
Hamilton was part of the Mercedes celebration at this year’s festival. The central stationary feature of the event was a sculpture honoring the history of Mercedes-Benz with early and later race cars sitting on ribbons arching over Goodwood house.
Getting into a Merecedes-Benz F1 W03, Hamilton proceeded to take his turn at the hill climb but not without stopping to perform donut burn-outs in two different places for the crowd. The car he drove was once raced by seven-time Formula 1 World Champion Michael Schumacher.
The 50th anniversary of Surtees’ 1964 F1 title was marked with a special run up the hill in his Ferrari 164 in tandem with Raikkonen’s 2007 title-winning F2007 that the Finn drove right behind him. The moment was a special one not only for Ferrari fans but also for fans of Formula 1 history. Past and present drove right past spectators at the same time in what was described as a “magical moment.”
In another example of bringing drivers with cars of the F1 variety together again, Damon Hill was also reunited with the Williams FW18-Renault in which he claimed the 1996 title.
