How do you spend your spare time? Do you just sleep when you are not working? Vegetate, maybe? Or do you just putter around the house accomplishing nothing? There are a few people, not many, who just have nothing to look forward to, have a lack of ambition, and maybe feel they have to leave behind as a legacy.
When life first began to socialize and become a community, began farming, making items to use and selling their items to others. Then they start employing other people to help keep up with the demands for their ideas. And so starts the business of entrepreneurs. Some of these people didn’t have the confidence to start a business of their own, but they tinkered with ideas that popped into their heads, or try to improve on other peoples’ ideas. This started what we call hobbies. Something to pass the time, and give them a sense of accomplishment.
Today, many new businesses are cropping up born of hobbies. New ideas and inventions start out as hobbies, and if interest becomes intense, they become businesses. It’ s American ingenuity at its best. Many of these businesses started out as hobbies from people who were already employed, but as their employment comes to and end, the idea of using their hobbies to supplement their income evolves into a new business.
Hobbies have another purpose. I recently became unable to work for about four months due to foot surgery. I knew that will be a long four months with knowing it severely cut into my income. As time came closer to surgery, I made a mental list of what I could possibly do to kill time. The list came went like this: do more writing, start oil painting again, do word search puzzles. About two months I started putting into motion an internet radio station, thus started MyrtleTree Broadcasting Company. After the surgery what I accomplished in those four months of healing surprised even me. The radio station started, playing old radio programs and music from the 1920’s to the early 1950’s twenty four hours a day. I painted two oil paintings, wrote several articles for yeahstub.com. I even published a book, ” Random Thoughts of Modern Society”. All that as well as doing word search puzzles.
Hobbies are good to use for therapy, help in the healing process, to keep your mind to work, starting businesses, supplementing income, ministry, and just to pass the time. If you do not have a hobby, you are missing a lot in life. Consider what you are good in, or even what your interests are, and dabble in that. It doesn’t have to be elaborate, or expensive. But it will help keep your sanity. Hobbies, they are a way to keep you out of trouble…maybe.
