The Honey Boo Boo experiment is over. TLC has finally yanked the plug from the reality television show that has followed the churlish family of Georgia child pageant contestant Alana “Honey Boo Boo” Thompson since 2012. The controversial show – seen by some as “must see” jocular television and others as nothing more than a look-in at a group of uncultured slobs – was yanked after producers found merit in the report that Honey’s mama was dating a convicted child molester.
Writes ABC News on Oct. 24: “The decision comes on the heels of a TMZ report that show matriarch Mama June, or June Shannon, is dating a convicted child molester.” Mama June, a mother of four including the now nine-year-old Alana, denies that she’s dating a man whose court records show that he was convicted in 2004 for aggravated child molestation.
“TLC has cancelled the series ‘Here Comes Honey Boo Boo’ and ended all activities around the series, effective immediately,” a spokesperson for the network told ABC News. “Supporting the health and welfare of these remarkable children is our only priority. TLC is faithfully committed to the children’s ongoing comfort and well-being.”
As far as potential future episodes of the show come next season? “TLC is not currently in production on ‘Here Comes Honey Boo Boo,’” the statement said. “We are very concerned about this new information.” On behalf of American viewers, we mirror those concerns, but thank goodness we no longer need to entertain ourselves with the bumpkin dregs of clodhopping buffoons.
TLC broke the news that Mama June was carrying on a relationship with a man identified as 53-year-old Mark McDaniel, a convicted pedophile who forced an 8-year-old girl to perform oral sex on him. Per TLC: “June was dating McDaniel at the same time he molested the child. We will not identify the child but it’s someone with whom June has contact.”
McDaniel’s served ten years in federal prison and can be found in the Georgia sex offender registry. TLC sources said June was seeing McDaniel since his release this summer, and had been “sneaking away from production of the show and meeting up with him” and “buying him various gifts.”
June, for her part, issued a rambling defense on the Honey Boo Boo Facebook page, writing:
I want to make a post trying to clear up the rumors remember you can’t believe everything you read! It isnt true i promise my kids r #1 priority over anything else and I would never put them in danger period over this or anything else they r my life this is my past I left him 10 yrs ago for it and I wouldn’t go back.
So there you have it. Sound off below: Happy that Honey Boo Boo has been canceled?
