Honey Boo Boo and her mother, known as Mama June, have been known for cheesy sentiments such as “you better redneckognize.” But there’s nothing cheesy about Mama June’s decision to improve her health with a high protein low carb diet. Choosing cheese for snacks and chicken for dinner, she lost 120 pounds, reported the Inquisitr on August 1.
Mama June previously weighed 400 pounds, which put her at risk for conditions such as diabetes and hypertension. She says that she did not undergo surgery or use weight loss medications. Instead, she made low carb diet swaps that focused on the family’s favorite foods.
Rather than packaged snack cakes, Mama June nibbles on chunks of cheese. She prepares baked chicken for dinner rather than spaghetti and sips water instead of diet soda.
It’s a diet shown to do more than boost weight loss. Researchers at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) and the University of Adelaide in Australia just completed a study showing that a high protein low carb diet is the best choice for diabetes. It also reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease and improved cholesterol levels, reported Medscape Medical News on July 30.
“The findings from this study suggest that a novel eating pattern that markedly limits carbohydrates and increases protein and unsaturated fat may have more favorable therapeutic potential for optimizing the management of type 2 diabetes and reducing cardiovascular disease risk as part of a holistic lifestyle-modification program,” said principal investigator Grant D. Brinkworth, PhD, associate professor and senior research scientist at CSIRO. He noted that it should also include exercise.
Mama June was not specific about her exercise. However, she also attributed her slim-down success to staying busy.
Making such dramatic diet changes can be challenging. But Mama June had the support of her family, who also benefited. She had previously been criticized for the choices she made for her children, such as the sugary, caffeinated “Go-Go Juice” that she mixed up for Honey Boo Boo.
In featuring protein in her diet, Mama June represents the new trend among consumers who believe that eating more protein is the best way to lose weight and get healthy. A survey showed that 71 percent of Americans want to include more protein in their diet, reported South Coast Today on July 31.
And the NPD Group, which conducted that survey, feels the trend is here to stay. Darren Seifer, a food and beverage analyst for the company, points out that the concept of eating protein is “not restrictive.” And it’s easy to understand that by eating more protein, you can cut cravings and boost weight loss.
“Consumers just want to know, is it good or is it bad?” Seifer says. “If you can whittle it down and make it simple for the consumer, the trend could take off.”
And it appears that Mama June is doing her part to help. Will she be writing a “Mama June’s Weight Loss” book soon, or has she “redneckognized” the potential? Stay tuned.
