In the heart of Santa Barbara’s sweet Old Towne area, great find The Palace Grill has been feted since it first opened it doors, and it continue to offer hot and happening genuine spicy Cajun fare for its fans.
My life partner and I were visiting Santa Barbara as part of a romantic quick getaway, and The Palace Grill was right at the top of our list of venues which we absolutely had to eat at while there. My sweetie has eaten here a number of times before, especially while he was a travel writer for AAA of SoCal. Great Cajun food just off of State Street in the heart of Santa Barbara’s touristy Old Towne district.
Note: Because The Palace Grill does readily fill up you do want to phone ahead to make a reservation for your party, especially during The Santa Barbara busy Summer Season.
As you approach the door from wherever you were so luck as to be able to park, you will start being greeted by the strains of live music just outside the restaurant as you approach. Bring a few singles to tip a live musician greeting.
Special Features: Yes, a Palace tradition is to have the whole dining room sing along with Satchmo, trilling on “It’s a Wonderful Life.” I’m a pretty good soprano. My life partner doesn’t oft get to hear me sing, so he enjoyed it while I enjoyed singing robustly. Everyone joins in, making for a very friendly atmosphere all around. Raise your glass. They will to you, too!
They feature their full menu options at their website menu (http://palacegrill.com/menus/), so I had already started the online digital dating relationship dream fantasizing before we got there. While I was half in love with their Crawfish Étouffée ($20, really not bad at all since “Red Lobster” charges that much a chain experience and pasta filler), since my partner ordered it, I instead went with Louisiana Soft Shell Crabs ($28). Yummy all around.
The deserts are massive, 3 portion size. In a party of 2 or 3, you could easily share. You do need to order the bread pudding desert, my life mate’s choice, while I naturally went with chocolate, early one because it takes AWHILE to cook.
The alcohol in the sauce was too much. I prefer just a taste. The waiter NP graciously brought me a creamy desert sauce to fill my chocolate with which was virgin.
Note: You will have a hoot and a half looking at their special bathroom tiles in the loo. They were a delight. Wish MY bathroom had their tiles!
I just wished we had had more time the morning we left SB or I would have been ordering lunch TO GO. I want to try way more dishes on the menu than I possibly could in just one visit. You will, too!
