On June 27 & June 28, Houston jazz fans will have the opportunity to see a collaboration between some of Houston’s and New York’s finest jazz musicians come together for two nights at Cezanne’s. The Houston-NY Collective consists of Houston’s own David Caceres (sax/vocals) and Andre Hayward (trombone); and New York’s Cory Cox (drums), Caili O’Doherty (piano), and Marcus Varela (bass).
David Caceres is considered a double threat because he as a smooth sax sound along with soulful vocals. He is graduate from Berklee and has a self-titled CD that can purchased on amazon.com. Andre Hayward is an educator and conduct clinics around the United States and abroad. He serves as the Jazz Trombone Specialist at the University of Texas – Butler School of music. Cory Cox, native Houstonian, began at his musical interest at Johnson Middle School and The High School for The Performing and Visual Arts. He graduated from the University of the Pacific. He teaches privately and leads ensemble workshops at Stanford Jazz in California and Litchfield Jazz in Connecticut. Caili O’Doherty, is a graduate of Berklee. She obtain the national award for jazz piano for Downbeat Magazine and ASCAP Foundation Young Jazz Composer. She currently works at WeBop early childhood jazz education program at Jazz Lincoln Center. Marcus Varela, another native Houstonian, attended The High School for The Performing and Visual Arts. He is a graduate of New School University/Mannes School of Music in NYC. Marcus is also an accomplished composer for Film/TV. He has performed on three continents in over 10 countries.
