Seems like just yesterday everyone was complaining about the frigid temperatures of old man winter. Welcome to hot and humid days of June, July, and August! Always a refreshing cool treat is ice cream! What’s your favorite flavor? Chocolate? Black cherry? Oatmeal cookie? Decisions, decisions! Hard to decide at the Hula Girl Ice cream and Grill. There are 48 flavors of Hershey and Blue Bell brands!
Hula Girl started off as a street vender owned by Ray and Rose Pittman and for the last 3 years has a colorful home on 106 W Railroad Street, Selma, North Carolina with street parking, indoor and outdoor seating.
The summer, 2014 menu has a variety of appetizers, salads, char-grilled Angus Beef burgers, speciality sandwiches and all your favorite ice cream creations! Great deals like the Amtrak Express (6 pack Carolina Packer Hot Dog Tray) and the CSX Railroad Special (12 pack Carolina Packer Dog Tray). How many places have a variety of kinds of dogs? Hula girl has beef, sausage, and corn dogs. Why the railroad theme? They are located near the Selma Union Station’s railroad diamond of Amtrak, Norfolk Southern and CSX railroads. There are take out menus available but once at the restaurant other menu items are listed as well.
Favorites of local patrons are the Hula Hunk (A southern favorite! An extra large hunk of grilled balongna with lettuce, cheese, tomato, and mayo on Texas toast), the Luau ( A ham sandwich gone to Hawaii with pineapple, banana peppers, and sweet hot mustard on Texas toast). They say the cheese burgers are huge filled with your choice 1/4 or 1/2 pound beef. Several guests order ribeye steak sandwiches. Kevin Radford of Kenly, NC says “it is a 6-8 oz ribeye cooked to order on a toasted sesame seed bun and that he loves his with mayo on it.” Chris Webb of Lucama, NC questions “what man doesn’t like steak? It’s mouthwatering and lightly seasoned.” Bob DeBolt of Wyoming, IL says his “ribeye sandwich was very good and he would get it again”.
Along with the 48 flavors served in cups or cones Hula girl has a variety of ice cream specialities. Lots of one of a kind local dishes like Fried Hula Chip Sundae (Hot fried cinnamon dough, vanilla ice cream, whipped cream and a cherry), Hot Jacks (Peach, Sweet potato or apple jacks with ice cream, caramel, whipped cream and a cherry) and move over S’mores, there is a Moonpie Sundae! (A heated Moonpie, vanilla ice cream, hot fudge, whipped cream and a cherry). Sounds like heaven!
Hula girl also has Hawaiian Shaved ice and milkshakes. Deborah Barbour of Selma, NC says her favorite ice cream flavors are “chocolate and cookie dough ice cream in a cup or cone.” I recommend the oatmeal cookie flavor. Add $1.00 and you can add a scoop to the shaved ice.
