Today’s guest is Laurence St. John, author of the YA fantasy, Metatron: The Mystical Blade. While working in the steel processing business for almost fifteen years, Laurence’s place of employment changed hands, for the third time in 2006; fighting for his job, again. In the same year his first granddaughter, Kendall, “Papa’s Angel” was born. He described this as one of the most uplifting moments of his life. In addition, it was during this time when his emotions were running wild; he became inspired as well as determined to write his penned-up thoughts on paper. Nearly four years later, he had completed his first middle grade fantasy novel, Metatron: The Angel Has Risen.
Thank you for this interview, Laurence. Can you tell us a little about yourself and how long you’ve been writing?
While working in the steel industry, my place of employment changed hands for the third time. Fortunately I was able to retain my job. In the same year my first granddaughter Kendall was born. This was one of the most uplifting moments of my life. It was at this time when I became inspired as well as determined to write my penned-up thoughts on paper. A few years later, and many hours of writing, editing, revising and re-editing, it was finished. This journey had many bumps and curves in the road but at the end, it was all worth it. I have been writing all my life, in my head, but professionally for eight years.
Can you tell us briefly what your book is about?
Young Tyler Thompson fights crime using superpowers bequeathed by the angel Metatron. But the angel held something back, and Tyler must get it before the sinister Dr. Payne does, or even worse, the devil’s most ruthless warrior, Black Shadow. With the help of the Mystical Blade of Credence, he succeeds, only to watch Payne’s girlfriend creates havoc.
Why did you choose your particular genre?
While growing up, intrigued and fascinated when I read/watched fantasy, science fiction, superhero, and action adventure books/movies. This is why I love writing Teen/YA Fantasy novels.
What was your greatest challenge writing this book?
My greatest challenge was to make the story more exciting and captivating than the first book in the series.
Are you published by a traditional house, small press or are you self-published?
My books are published by Imajin Books who is a traditional publisher. They are awesome to work with and I very appreciative.
Was it the right choice for you?
So far this has been the right choice financially for me. Maybe down the road if other choices arise I’ll take a look at all my options then chose the best one.
How are you promoting your book thus far?
I’ll be promoting my book on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, blogs, LinkedIn and word of mouth. I also use tweet teams such as World Literary Café where other people in the team retweet your tweet. In addition I pay for promotions such as BarginBooksy, Ereader News Today and Kindle Nation Daily.
How is that going for you?
For my first book it’s going okay so far however I envisioned I would do a lot better. I’ll have to wait and see for this one.
Can you tell us one thing you have done that actually resulted in one or more sales?
I have been selling books at my local towns’ street fair, The Genoa Street Fair. The first year I sold 35 books and the second 20 books. I’ll be doing the same this year for both my novels.
Do you have another job besides writing?
Yes, I work full time, 50 hours a week, at Precision Strip Inc. in Perrysburg Ohio. My position is Administrations Manager which my main functions are human resources, purchasing and I.T. Because of this I write in the evenings, weekends, and holidays and during vacation.
If you could give one book promotion tip to new authors, what would that be?
I have found so far that Ereader News Today has been the most fruitful when promoting my first novel. I will definitely be using it for my new release, METATRON: The Mystical Blade, as well.
What’s next for you?
I have begun to write book three in the METATRON series and have additional notes for book four. Who knows, I might be co-authoring a book as well. Only time will tell.
Thank you for this interview, Laurence St. John. Can you tell us where we can find you on the web?
Metatron: The Mystical Blade is available at Amazon.
