Today is an important day for rapper Lecrae. It is the release of his album Anomaly and his follow up to the grammy award winning album Gravity. Recently I got to know the story of his latest album Anomaly from inception to completion.
What albums do you remember listening to growing up?
Outkast (all of their albums) The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, all DJ Quik albums, Tupac All Eyez on Me, and Common Like Water for Chocolate.
Where are you located right now?
I’m home in Atlanta. I love seeing new places and cultures.
What is your most favorite part about traveling and touring?
The more distinct the culture the more I enjoy it.
Where has been the dopest place to perform at this year?
Definitely Hong Kong, just seeing people halfway across the world enjoying the music and being impacted by the message was amazing. Plus the culture there was dope.
In your own words, define ANOMALY.
Anomaly is when you don’t fit the expected norm. Like “wait what is this?! It doesn’t belong here.” Its what the system never planned for but now has to adapt to. Its Neo in The Matrix.
What was the biggest hardship (if any) that arose while recording ANOMALY?
Probably just being tired and drained emotionally. I had just finished a 50 city tour and was beat up. It’s depressing a little when you don’t see outside the tour bus and underground in a stadium. If you go outside near the venue there are lots of fans everywhere so you can’t just have a minute to enjoy the sunshine alone and think. So I had to shake off all that emotional baggage before I could record or I would have had a dark album.
Where did you mainly record tracks for ANOMALY?
I mainly recorded in Atlanta at the Reach Records studio. I like to have people around and an environment with constant feedback on what I’m doing.
Name the albums I would find on your iPod at this very moment?
Mali Music newest album
Christion Gray “School of Roses”
Tedashii “Below Paradise”
If you could be in the studio collaborating with anyone dead or alive who would it be?
Lauryn Hill Hands down.
What do you feel has been the greatest piece of advice ever given to you?
God gave you your own race to run, stop comparing yourself to other people. They have their race and you have yours. Run hard and don’t quit.
Lecrae is a perfect example of someone living out his dreams. Stay working hard and consistent and I believe we will all flourish. Anomaly out now!
