While conducting an interview with VICE News, an ISIS terrorist warned that an attack is coming to the United States in the near future, The Blaze reported Thursday. Farah Shirdon, a Canadian who goes by the name, Abu Usamah Somali, said there would be an attack on New York City “soon.”
Shirdon, VICE added, was recently seen in a propaganda video burning his Canadian passport. He also promised to destroy both Canada and the United States. In the interview with VICE, Shirdon said no one spoke to him or recruited him into ISIS. He joined, he said, after he read the Koran. And, he added, there are as many as 15,000 foreign fighters with the terror group.
“[We] will make some attacks in New York soon,” he said. “A lot of brothers there are mobilizing right now. … Mobilizing for a brilliant attack, my friend.”
“I hope Barack Obama listens to this message,” he added. “I swear you infidel, I swear to almighty Allah, we will fight you until the end.” The Islamist told VICE the group seeks to fly the Islamic flag over the White House and might stop its terrorism when Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is “crucified for his war crimes.”
The terrorist also claimed to know “thousands upon thousands” of people in the West ready to carry out attacks “right now.” According to the Fusion Intelligence Center in Charleston, West Virginia, ISIS is training and recruiting members in the United States and has monitored people with ties to terrorism passing through the state.
“There are areas in the United States that are not too far from here, that have very large populations that are being recruited for ISIS right now,” said Director Thomas Kirk. “There are people associated with Al Qaeda, there are people on the Terrorist Watch List who do travel through West Virginia, whether it’s through the airports or through the roads.”
On Thursday, Fox News reported that Iraqi intelligence said it uncovered a plot to attack subways in the United States and Paris. Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said he was told of the plot by Baghdad, but, Fox added, the claim could not be independently verified.
“Today, while I’m here I’m receiving accurate reports from Baghdad that there were arrests of a few elements and there were networks from inside Iraq to have attacks … on metros of Paris and U.S.,” he said. “They are not Iraqis. Some of them are French, some of them are Americans. But they are in Iraq.”
“We have not confirmed such a plot, and would have to review any information from our Iraqi partners before making further determinations,” said National Security Council spokeswoman Caitlin Hayden. “We take any threat seriously and always work to corroborate information we receive from our partners. We’re obviously very focused on the issue of foreign fighters, as you saw evidenced yesterday at the Security Council session the President chaired.”
“We are aware of the Iraqi Prime Minister’s statements and we are in close contact with the FBI and other federal partners as we assess this particular threat stream,” New York Police Department Deputy Commissioner of Intelligence and Counterterrorism John Miller added Thursday. “New York City normally operates at a heightened level of security and we adjust that posture daily based on our evaluation of information as we receive it.”
