It’s Labor Day. Are you looking for something to do that is fun,. local and inexpensive? Canstatters starts Oktoberfest a month early, Located on Academy Rd near Frankford, in the northeast section of Philadelphia, the festivities run from August 30 through Sept 1,2014. It’s open to children of all ages, and admission for a day is only $6.00.
Of course,there is beer there, all kinds of beer. For kids, there is soda and carnival rides from Johnson’s Family Amusements, which includes a huge slide, a bounce house and a couple of rides for grown up kids. The correct name for the festivity is called Volkfest.
Once inside,there is entertainment, and food. You can go to the main food stand for bratwurst or hamburgers, or venture a few feet farther onto the grounds and see the Fireplace Grill. They have BBQ chicken that is delicious. None of the food is terribly expensive. The top price comes in at about $11.00. Plenty of food can he had for less than that, as well.
New at the Volkfest is a way to raise money for Children,s Hospital. There is a dunk tank, a Frisbee throw and foot ball toss. The Frisbee throw is harder than it looks. During opening day, the weather held a few people back buy by mid afternoon,the place was starting to get packed. Parking is free. If the lot is full,there is on street parking all around the place.
The Canstatters compound is large enough to facilitate several thousand people. In case of bad weather, there are huge tents and there is even a bar inside the main building. You can read another article on a past festival here.
