Over the years I have tasted many of the great wines from J Vineyard & Winery. The quality and consistency of their wines are superb. In addition, I am impressed with the subtle yet dynamic characteristics and expression that go into the wine.
When my daughter came into town to introduce us to her boyfriend, we wanted to share something special for the occasion. I decided on two J Vineyards Pinot Noirs. I thought it would be fun to compare the wines. The first was the 2012 J Vineyards Pinot Noir Estate Grown Russian River Valley. This wine blends the following Pinot Noir clones 114, 667, 777, 828, 2A, Rochiloi and Calera. The Pinot Noir is delicate in texture with a red cranberry color. It is a medium bodied wine with strawberry aromas. I detected a sweetness that evolved from the cherry and red fruit flavors along with notes of licorice. The wine was very drinkable and one that can stand on its own.
There really was no comparison because it was the 2012 J Vineyards Misterra Pinot Noir Russian River Valley that wowed me and I found the most interesting. This wine should be opened and allowed to air for a bit before consumption. The wine is also medium bodied but much more complex than the Estate Grown Pinot Noir. The aromas are that of cherries. You sense dark fruit immediately. The finish is vanilla. I reserved some of the wine to try again the next day. It was even better on the second sitting. The wine was smooth and silky with it blueberry flavors. Its non-traditional blend of 94% Pinot Noir, 6% Pinotage and 4% Pinot Meunier makes the wine unique and approachable. This combination gives the wine its complexity. It certainly makes the wine befitting to its name, Misterra. Until you discover the blend, the wine holds a bit of a mystery but it comes from the terra, the land or we might say the terrior. It could be considered the mystery of the terrior.
One might say that Misterra is a wine that celebrates J Vineyards & Winery’s 25th harvest. It celebrates the terrior driven wines that owner Judy Jordan and winemaker Melissa Stackhouse set out to achieve.
While the Estate Grown Pinot Noir is readily available, the Misterra is only available directly through the winery or the winery visitor center.
Being enamored with the Misterra I know it will be on my list of top wines I experienced in 2014.
