Jack Osbourne credited a low carb, high-fat ketogenic-style Paleo diet for helping him manage his multiple sclerosis and fueling his recent 70-pound weight loss.
“Diet is a big thing,” Osbourne told Dr. Oz. “I am a firm believer in you are what you eat. I juice a lot, and I try to stick to a Paleo diet.”
Sadly, Jack was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis just two weeks after his daughter Pearl was born in 2012. Osbourne said the Paleo diet effectively manages his multiple sclerosis because it reduces inflammation — a major driver of chronic disease as well as weight gain.
I look at MS as inflammation, so I try and eliminate foods that cause inflammation, like dairy, gluten and grains.”
Multiple sclerosis is a chronic degenerative disease of the nervous system. Sufferers often experience a loss of vision in the early stages, numbness in their extremities, and tingling.
Jack has also credited the ketogenic-style Paleo diet for his stunning 70-pound weight loss. The 5-foot-10 Jack, who has struggled with weight his entire life, slimmed down from 260 pounds to 190 pounds following the gluten-free eating plan.
Meanwhile, Jack’s mom, Sharon Osbourne, has credited the low-carb, high-fat, ketogenic-inspired Atkins diet for her 30-pound weight loss.
Sharon lost 30 pounds in six weeks by following a ketogenic-style Atkins diet that limited her daily carb intake to about 25 grams, an Atkins rep told me. Sharon, 61, said she has never felt better.
Like the Paleo diet, the low-carb, high-fat ketogenic diet has been shown to prevent and treat disease, including epilepsy, depression, bipolar disorder, Alzheimer’s and cancer.
Renowned cancer scientist Dr. Thomas Seyfried told me the LCHF ketogenic diet beats chemotherapy for almost all cancers. “The ketogenic diet may one day replace the standard of care for most cancers,” said Dr. Seyfried. “To those who doubt me, I say: ‘Prove me wrong.'”
Physician Reverses Multiple Sclerosis Symptoms With Paleo Diet
Jack Osbourne’s success treating his MS with the Paleo diet isn’t surprising to Dr. Terry Wahls, a professor at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine.
Dr. Wahls, who was diagnosed with MS in 2000, developed her own personalized Paleo diet plan called the Wahls Protocol, and has been managing her multiple sclerosis for the past seven years with her program.
“I used what I had learned from the medical literature, functional medicine, and my knowledge of the Hunter-Gatherer diet to create my food plan,” Wahl wrote in her bestseller, The Wahls Protocol.
Dr. Wahls said her MS improved dramatically, without drugs, after she switched to the Paleo diet. “The results stunned my physician, my family, and me: within a year, I was able to walk through the hospital without a cane and even complete an 18-mile bicycle tour,” she said.
Similarly, singer Chad Vaccarino of the duo A Great Big World is treating his multiple sclerosis with a low-carb, high-fat Paleo diet inspired by Dr. Wahls.
“My symptoms went away completely,” said Vaccarino. “I’m sharing my story in the hopes that it might inspire you the way Dr. Wahls’ story inspired me. I don’t know if it will work for everyone, but it did for me and I’m grateful.”
Low-Carb Paleo Diet Accelerates Weight Loss and Prevents Disease
The Paleo diet has a huge celebrity following, including Tim McGraw (who credits it for his 40-pound weight loss and rippling abs at age 48).
The Paleo diet emphasizes high-quality animal proteins, healthy fats, non-starchy vegetables, and excludes gluten, sugar, dairy, legumes, alcohol, and processed foods.
Research suggests the Paleo diet accelerates weight loss, reduces blood pressure, prevents and manages cancer, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, heart disease, depression, and even Alzheimer’s. A recent study published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition indicates the Paleo diet is twice as effective as other diets for promoting weight loss and reducing belly fat.
While press reports tend to focus on the Paleo diet’s efficacy at fueling weight loss, the diet’s founder, Dr. Loren Cordain, said the plan’s major health benefit lies in its capacity to prevent and cure chronic disease.
“Clinical trials have shown the Paleo diet is the optimum diet that can lower the risk of cardiovascular disease, blood pressure, markers of inflammation, help with weight loss, reduce acne, promote optimum health and athletic performance,” said Cordain, author of The Paleo Diet for Athletes and The Paleo Diet Cookbook.
