Jane Fonda is in phenomenal shape, thanks to her lifelong dedication to a healthy diet and regular exercise. So it’s no surprise that Fonda is as known for her acting as she is for being a fitness icon.
Oscar winner Meryl Streep praised Jane for helping her with her weight loss goals during a speech honoring Fonda, who was honored with the American Film Institute’s 42nd Life Achievement Award.
“Are you ready to work out?” Streep joked during the opening of her speech. “Jane, you helped my career in so many ways, like losing the weight after each child. Almost 40 years ago, you put your arm around me, and like a big sister, walked me into movie-making.”
Fonda’s Workout Videos Launched Aerobics Craze
Jane’s bestselling workout videos helped launch the 1980s aerobics craze. Fonda has released 23 best-selling fitness DVDs since 1982. She revealed her workout secrets in her latest exercise video, Jane Fonda Prime Time.
In addition to helping her look great (and years younger), Fonda said daily workouts helped her overcome depression, bulimia, anorexia, three divorces, and breast cancer.
“The fact that I have always remained physically active has had a great deal to do with [staying sane],” Jane told Stuff NZ. “It has kept me centered and balanced emotionally. Maintaining physical fitness and social networks is so critical to successful aging.”
Struggled with Anorexia and Bulimia for 20 Years
Fonda, who battled anorexia, bulimia and poor body image during her 20, 30s and 40s, has adopted a more laid-back approach to fitness now, and follows a healthy diet featuring lots of vegetables and lean proteins.
Jane has admitted to getting several plastic surgeries through the years. She had a facelift in her 40s and another one in February 2010. She also got breast implants when she was younger and recently had a chin lift as well as plastic surgery to remove the bags under her eyes.
As she has gotten older, Fonda has transitioned away from the rigorous, high-impact aerobic exercise she extolled during the 1980s to gentler, lower-impact workouts. Fonda does yoga, strength-trains, walks, cycles, and uses the elliptical trainer.
Jane, who has an artificial hip and titanium knee, said being an avid exerciser all her life has paid off — both physically and psychologically:
“I work out every day when I’m home. I do 30 to 40 minutes of aerobics and lift weights to maintain muscle mass, keep my bones strong and my joints strong, more for functional reasons than anything else. I’m very careful about what I eat too.
But I think that far more important than any of this is your attitude. If you are happy, feel that your life has meaning and all the people you love are doing OK and you feel good about yourself, I think that shows. That’s what makes a difference.”
While most people dread getting older, Fonda embraces it. She shared her views on fitness, aging, and happiness in her memoir, Prime Time: Love, Health, Sex, Fitness.
