3 quick questions . . .
with Janna Pelle
Janna Pelle is an up-and-coming classical pianist turned DIY pop performer. On November 10, she will officially release her new single “City Life” with a live performance at the New York hotspot PIANOS. The new track is off her upcoming CD Key Change which tells the tuneful tale of “the history of the piano through pop music.” Pelle was happy to share her insights with us.
Here are the 3 quick questions asked of Pelle:
1.What was your first professional gig and how did it feel?
Pelle: I remember feeling super cool when I was asked to open for my first national act, The Easy Star All Stars, a band who is famous for their dub renditions of classic rock albums, like Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Dub Band, Radiodread, Dub Side of the Moon and the like. I felt like a rock star saying I was on a bill of a show most of my friends were already going to anyway.
2. The ghost of George Carlin visits you and gives you a special “two-minute” warning. You can only do one more creative project before you die but you can have anyone and anything you want in order to do it. What do you do?
Pelle: Oh NO! George Carlin’s Ghost! If I only had the chance to complete one more project, I’d definitely want to finish the concept album I’m working on now, Key Change.
It’s a history of the evolution of the keyboard instrument through pop music – every track is a different keyboard instrument from harpsichord to synthesizer. And to combine the questions and get the best of both worlds, I would want to work with David Byrne for this project, who is still very much alive but very busy with his own projects like his new musical Here Lies Love and his tour with William Onyeabor. But hey, he made an exception for St. Vincent . . .so maybe it’s not so out of reach.
3. What is next for you?
Pelle: Immediately next is the track and video releases of my new single, “City Life.” The single release party is on November 10 at PIANOS. “City Life” is by far the catchiest song on Key Change and I’m really looking forward to it making a great first impression of the album as a whole.
