Beyonce and Jay Z recently brought publicity to the vegan diet world by undertaking a 22-day plant-based cleanse. But neither won the title of PETA’s “Sexiest Vegetarian Celebrities.” Instead, it’s Jared Leto and Ellen Page who received the honors, reported Mother Nature Network on Friday.
PETA commended Jared for his years of vegan commitment. “The benefits of his vegan eating sure do show! Jared is 42 years old and arguably hasn’t aged in 20 years,” praised PETA.
Ellen Page also came in for her share of publicity. PETA called her a “feminist, an environmentalist, an activist, a pioneer, and a compassionate vegan.”
Although some experts contend that vegan diets don’t work well as way to lose weight, it’s the diet that Jennifer Lopez used to shed 10 pounds, reported Hollywood Life on Wednesday.
Jennifer used a five-week vegan diet plan designed by Marco Borges, who also worked with Beyonce and Jay Z on their own vegan cleanses.
Want to try a day in her diet? Eat gluten-free cereal such as millet for breakfast with fruit and almond milk.
Lunch features a kale salad with red peppers, and dinner delights include pasta made from zucchini with vegan cheese. As for snacks, Jennifer likes 22 Day’s Cherry Chocolate Bliss Bars.
In addition to shedding pounds, Jennifer went from a size four to a size two. Part of her weight loss resulted from six-hour dance workouts.
“You got to work out, you got to watch what you eat. It’s a job – you’ve got to buckle down,” summed up Jennifer about her efforts.
And as to those who think you need animal protein for energy? “I feel great mentally and physically!” Jennifer declared.
In addition to Jennifer, several celebrities have voiced their vegan virtuosity. Actress Kristen Bell credited “Forks Over Knives” for persuading her to shift to a plant-based diet.
“Forks Over Knives outlines an extremely compelling approach to the prevention of heart disease and cancer,” she declared. Film director James Cameron also changed his diet after seeing the documentary.
“I watched that film Forks Over Knives. I went into the kitchen, I took everything out of the kitchen that was not a plant – and for 5 1/2 months I’ve eaten only plants,” he declared.
For those who are concerned about vitamins and minerals, registered dietitian Julieanna Hever, co-author of “Forks Over Knives – The Cookbook: Over 300 Recipes for Plant-Based Eating All Through the Year,” notes that vegans should be “aware of your vitamin B12 intake. This vitamin is created from microorganisms in the soil, which animals consume, thereby making it part of their bodies and providing it to people who consume their flesh.”
Supplements are available, but you can also get enough vitamin B12 from plant-based sources. “Nutritional yeast and fortified plant-based milks contain ample vitamin B12 or you can take a supplement or chew some B12-fortified gum. We require 5-10 micrograms per day.”
The other frequently asked question: Do vegans need to use a plant-based protein powder to ensure getting enough? “Protein is found in all whole plant foods, and it has never been demonstrated that we require more than what is found naturally in a varied whole-food plant-based diet that is sufficient in calories,” says Hever.
Although an athlete (or someone like Jennifer who dances six hours a day) might need more protein, she feels “this is generally achieved by consuming more food, so one will get more protein without changing the protein ratio.” And one option rather than turn to processed plant-based protein: Eat more legumes.
