On Saturday night, Terence Crawford took on Yuriorkis Gamboa in a battle of unbeaten fighters for the WBO lightweight title. Ultimately, it was Crawford who would come out on top when he scored an impressive ninth round knockout victory over Cuba’s Gamboa.
Things didn’t look so good early on, as Gamboa’s speed caused big problems for Crawford, who always seemed a step behind. He rarely hit Gamboa, losing each of the first four rounds in the opinions of most.
However, as the fight progressed, Crawford started to figure out Gamboa, and where he was missing early on, he started to catch him often in the latter rounds. Ultimately he would finish off Gamboa in the ninth round. The exciting fight which, aired on HBO, was a great showcase for Crawford, and may help elevate him to superstar status.
The fight really delivered, and in a sport that is struggling to find new stars to replace its older ones, fortunately, we may have another name that will bring interest to boxing.
Jeff Mayweather discussed the fight just after it reached its conclusion. He had predicted that Crawford would win the fight, but like many, he was surprised at how entertaining the contest was. Most observers has predicted a fight that would show pure boxing skill. While the skill was certainly on display, few expected the fireworks that would go along with it.
Here is what the former champion, and current trainer out of the Mayweather Boxing Club had to say about the fight, as well as what might lay ahead for the Omaha native.
