On June 28, 2014, Dr. Jen Arnold, who stars with her husband, businessman Bill Klein, on TLC’s reality TV series The Little Couple,’ joined CNN’s Sanjay Gupta via satellite to express her support for the ACE Kids Act in Washington, D.C.
The Advancing Care for Exceptional Kids Act of 2014, which is being sponsored by Representatives Joe Barton (R-TX) and Kathy Castor (D-FL) and cosponsored by Reps. Anna Eshoo (D-CA), Gene Green (D-TX) and Jaime Herrera Beutler (R-WA), is intended to help coordinate care to ensure optimal outcomes for children with medical complexity in Medicaid by establishing state-line-crossing Medicaid networks and national quality standards.
An estimated one in twenty-five children suffers from a medical complexity, which now reportedly accounts for as much as 33% of growth in new patients in children’s hospitals
As a neonatologist at the Texas Children’s Hospital, a cancer survivor, and the mother of two children, Will and Zoey, with dwarfism (and the plethora of medical complexities that come with it), Arnold is very familiar with medicine and healthcare in America as both a provider and recipient.
Arnold mentioned, as just one example of the difficulties facing parents of children with medical complexities, that her own insurance provider had recently stated that it would not cover medical expenses incurred in Dupont, where her two children had previously been receiving specialized care.
Arnold is also participating in the annual Speak Now for Kids Family Advocacy Day to highlight key issues that affect their health care. She has appeared in a video promoting the grassroots effort.
The Washington Post also reports that Arnold, along with her husband and Little Couple co-star Bill Klein, and their two children, met with lawmakers, including the sponsors of the bill, Barton and Castor, and a number of their colleagues in both the House and Senate.
TLC cameras were also reported to be following the couple as they went sightseeing with their children while in Washington afterwards, including boarding a faux pirate ship for a river cruise.
