Jessica Arrendale hides a baby, and her story of love and sacrifice makes headline news. Here’s what happened when the beautiful mother of two children got into a dispute with her former boyfriend earlier this month. After 33-year-old Arrendale returned to her home with their infant daughter one night, things turned violent. Arrendale grabbed a baseball bat to defend herself and her child, but her ex-boyfriend took control of the bat, allegedly striking her and their six-month-old baby with it. According to a Sept. 20, 2014 report by People, things only got worse from there.
Antoine Davis, the father of Jessica Arrendale’s six-month-old baby, followed the woman up two flights of stairs to the third floor of her townhouse in the Atlanta area. When Arrendale locked herself in the bathroom, Davis broke down the door. The 30-year-old former Marine who served in Iraq was holding an assault rifle outfitted with a suppressor when he entered the bathroom. Then he shot the mother of his infant daughter in the head.
Despite being fatally wounded, Jessica Arrendale hid the baby by placing her in the toilet bowl and lying over it. “He shot her and [the police] don’t know how she was able to twist her body and fall literally in the opposite direction,” Arrendale’s mother told WSB Radio. “[My daughter] was the hero,” she said, “because her last breath was saving the child.”
After allegedly shooting and killing Jessica Arrendale, the mother of one of his children, Davis committed suicide in the little girl’s bedroom. According to The Spreadit, the former couple was embroiled in a custody dispute at the time of the incident on Sept. 13, 2014. Davis leaves behind two other children.
The baby, whose name is Cobie, wasn’t recovered until 13 hours after her mother’s fatal shooting and her father’s subsequent suicide. Cobie was transported to a local Atlanta hospital with a traumatic head injury, likely the result of being struck with the baseball bat by her own father, and hypothermia. By hiding her baby, Jessica Arrendale saved her life.
An account has been established for the victim’s two children. In less than one week, the GoFundMe campaign has already raised more than $20,000 for Cobie and her half-sibling, a 15-year-old girl who is currently being raised by Arrendale’s mother.
“An amazing mother, daughter, sister and friend was taken way too soon. Jessica was one of the most beautiful people I have ever met. This fund has been set-up for the two children that she has left behind. Jessica was the sole provider for her household. As a friend, I feel obligated to do all things possible to make sure the children’s life remain in the state it was prior to the events that occured. There was no doubt of Jessica’s beauty, but when you truly knew her is when you saw the real beauty.”
