Browncoats and general Jewel Staite fans united at the Cincinnati Comic Expo to attend the “The Shiny Side of the ‘Verse with Jewel Staite,” panel on Saturday Sept. 20, 2014 at the Duke Energy Center in Cincinnati, OH. Jewel Staite, best known for her parts in Firefly, Stargate: Atlantis, Space Cases and Flash Forward, had panel at Cincinnati Comic Expo. The Q & A was moderated by Andrew Setters of Cincinnati’s WLWT Channel 5 News and answered just under 30 questions from fan boys and fangirls of all ages, including a final question by six year old Nolan McGillvary of Dayton, OH.
Staite opened the panel by mentioning she is a food nerd and said that she had already taken in Boca and Jean-Robert’s Table. The fans made sure to suggest more local favorites like Skyline, Graeters, and Goetta. She was on board with all the suggestions and, of Goetta (pronounced get-uh), even said
“Okay, I’m gonna put that on my list. Goetta? Alright, get a Goetta! I’m hilarious.”
Questions about Firefly and Stargate: Atlantis where in the majority, but there were a few questions about Flash Forward. When being asked about a Flash Forward reunion, Staite revealed the co-star Ben Foster was her first boyfriend. Reguarding the reunion, she said it would be “interesting”. She was also asked whee she met her current boyfriend Charlie. They met at an Elbow concert. Staite said:
“Have you ever heard of the band Elbow? Yes? They’re so good. Am I right? I’m a huge Elbow fan. They’re from the UK. I know it’s a weird name for a band but their music is amazing and the lyrics are beautiful and they are even better in concert. They are awesome. So yeah we met like normal people. Isn’t that weird? He’s not an actor.”
Alright Stargate fans, here’s your section. Staite shared that going into Altantis she was unfamiliar with the overwhelming amount of backstory and called her first day on the show “…the most stressful first day of any job I have ever had. “ On her first day, Staite said that she had to perform brain surgery on Dr.Weir (Torri Higginson) who she describes as “one of the most loved characters on the show” so she needed to learn medical babble. Also, Dr. Keller, Staite’s character’s addition to the cast, was not well received by some. Staite recalled her first day:
“Let me tell you this, on my first day there where protestors… There was a picket line; … [so big] that it made the local news, saying ‘Bring Beckett [Paul McGillion] back’… I had tons of techno babel… to sputter out like I knew what I was talking about AND I thought it was a joke, they had an actual brain surgeon on the set to teach me what to do with my hands so it looked like I knew what I was doing… It was insanely stressful. But the cast were lovely and they all just made fun of me… But they were sweet and made me laugh.”
That concludes the first part of our coverage. Check out part 2 for all of Jewel Staite’s answers pertaining to her much loved character Kaylee Frye, of Firefly and Serenity.
