Since Jim Morrison’s death in 1971 his legend has haunted Doors fans and rock ’n’ roll itself, but over the years ghost stories of Jim Morrison haunting have accumulated so let’s start with the newest and work our way back to the oldest (roughly).
Ultimate Classic Rock Magazine is running a Halloween story of “Tales of Classic Rockers from Beyond the Grave” which hit’s the ground running with a Doors ghost story. From a 2001 interview Ray Manzarek describes a recurring dream he was having of Jim Morrison returning from Paris and Ray is talking with Jim and Ray asks if Jim has written anything new and just before he answers Ray wakes up. Ray told Doors guitarist Robby Krieger of this dream and Robby said he’d been having the same dream!
Speaking of dreams, Robby Krieger himself claimed a dream of Jim Morrison reciting his poetry led him to track down John Haeny and ask about the tapes Jim had made on his 27th birthday and that led to The Doors creating the album “An American Prayer.”
While humans can be haunted by the memory of a person sometimes buildings seem to retain the memory or energy of a person as well, and a couple of Doors related buildings have been claimed to be haunted by Jim Morrison. The building that was once The Doors workshop at 8512 Santa Monica Boulevard, and they recorded “L.A. Woman” was for a time a Mexican restaurant (which has closed) but the owners were claiming that the ghost of Jim Morrison was haunting the bathroom. This may not be as far-fetched as it seems, Doors fans remember that Jim had recorded some of the vocals for “L.A. Woman” in the bathroom (it acted as the echo chamber) some of the phenomena associated with the haunting include lights ‘popping’ on and off, handles of doors jiggling. The owner Larry Nikola said that “The building moans and breathes and makes sounds I can’t explain.” You can read Chris Epting’s original article (with pictures) at “Jim Morrison’s Ghost Said to Haunt Restaurant Bathroom.”
About 4 years ago there was a news report coming out of Arlington, Virginia reported that Rhonda Baron who was now the owner of the house the Morrison’s lived in when Jim was a teenager had visited her when she was a teenager, and his ghost had lain next to her on her bed. A video is included in the article “Now Appearing in Arlington, VA Jim Morrison’s Ghost”.
America isn’t exclusive of Jim Morrison haunts Paris has also claimed a haunting at the Pere LaChaise cemetery. In 1997 Brett Meisner visited Pere LaChaise and had a picture taken by Jim’s grave. In 2002 Meisner looked at the picture again and discovered in the background was a wispy figure in the background that seemed to be in a white shirt and leather pants. Meisner’s photo and his story can be found on Youtube at “Spiritual Encounters with Jim Morrison”.
There’s always the Alta Cienaga Motel (which is right across the street from the what was The Doors Workshop) which in a video (above this article) from 2011 three Doors fans hang out in room 32 at the Alta Cineaga and they tried to contact Jim with a Ouija board.
Happy All Hallows Eve!
