The 2014 Chase for the Sprint Cup moves into the Contenders Round with this weekend’s event, the Hollywood Casino 400 at Kansas Speedway on Sunday, October 5th. All three Joe Gibbs Racing Cup Series drivers – Kyle Busch, Matt Kenseth and Denny Hamlin – advanced to the round of 12, and have three races in which to win or collect as many points as possible and move on to the Eliminator Round of eight. Also on the schedule this weekend at Kansas Speedway is the Nationwide Series Kansas Lottery 300 on Saturday, October 4th.
Hamlin, in the No. 11 FedEx Office Toyota Camry, has one win and three top 10 finishes in 12 starts at Kansas, his win coming in spring 2012. This past spring, Hamlin finished 18th at the 1.5-mile track.
Kenseth, in the No. 20 Dollar General Toyota on Sunday, has two wins and 10 top 10 finishes in 17 starts at the track, one of five drivers to have started every race at Kansas. Kenseth’s two wins came in fall 2012 and spring 2013 for two different teams – Roush Fenway Racing and JGR. Kenseth also returns to the seat of the No. 20 Reser’s Main St. Bistro Toyota Camry on Saturday in the Nationwide Series as the defending race winner. Kenseth has six top 10 finishes in seven Nationwide Series starts at Kansas, as well as two poles (2006 and 2007).
Busch, in the No. 18 M&Ms Toyota on Sunday, has had little but bad luck at Kansas in the Cup Series, with just two top 10 finishes in 14 starts at Kansas; his best finish is seventh (2006). His luck is better in the Nationwide Series, where he’ll be driving the No. 54 Monster Energy Toyota on Saturday – he has one win (2007) and seven top 10 finishes in nine starts at Kansas.
Elliott Sadler, in the No. 11 OneMain Financial Toyota, has three top 10 finishes in four Nationwide Series starts at Kansas, finishing 10th last year for JGR.
Qualifying for the Nationwide Series Kansas Lottery 300 takes place Saturday at 11:15 a.m. CT, followed by the green flag at 2:30 p.m. CT. Qualifying for the Hollywood Casino 400 takes place Friday at 4:45 p.m. CT, with the green flag flying on Sunday at 1 p.m. CT. Keep up with the action at joegibbsracing.com.
