The first race of the 2014 Chase for the Sprint Cup is this Sunday’s MyAFibStory.com 400 at Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet, Illinois. The Camping World Truck Series will race on Friday night, while the Nationwide Series races on Saturday. Joe Gibbs Racing driver Kyle Busch will be running in all three events, including the Truck Series race for his own Kyle Busch Motorsports team.
Busch is the defending race winner at Chicagoland in the Truck Series race as well as the Nationwide Series, and he picked up a second-place finish in last year’s Cup Series race. The driver of the No. 54 Monster Energy Toyota Camry in Saturday’s Jimmy John’s Freaky Fast 300 and the No. 18 M&Ms Toyota Camry on Sunday will be looking to rebound from some tough weeks as of late.
JGR driver Denny Hamlin will be making a rare double-duty appearance, driving the No. 20 SportClips Toyota in Saturday’s Nationwide Series race and the No. 11 FedEx Office Toyota on Sunday. Hamlin has not had the best luck at Chicagoland in the Cup Series, with just two top 10 finishes in eight starts at the 1.5-mile D-shaped oval. Hamlin also has two top 10 finishes in four Nationwide Series starts there, with his last start in 2008 resulting in a runner-up finish.
Matt Kenseth goes into the Chase winless, but returns to Chicagoland as the defending Cup Series race winner. The driver of the No. 20 Dollar General Toyota has five top10 finishes in 13 starts at the track.
Elliott Sadler, in the No. 11 OneMain Financial Toyota in Saturday’s Nationwide Series race, won at Chicagoland in July 2012. In July of this year, he finished 10th for JGR.
Qualifying for the Jimmy John’s Freaky Fast 300 takes place Saturday at 11:10 a.m. CT, followed by the green flag at 2:30 p.m. CT. Qualifying for Sunday’s MyAFibStory.com 400 Cup Series race is Friday at 5:45 p.m. CT; the race goes green Sunday at 1 p.m. CT. Keep up with the action at joegibbsracing.com.
