Joe Manganiello’s fitness secrets are a low-carb, sugar-free Paleo diet and CrossFit workouts, Celebrity Health reported. The 6-foot-5 Manganiello, who weighs 230 pounds, works out twice a day, six days a week, when he’s preparing for a film role or a shirtless photo shoot.
Joe said developing a superior physique first starts with becoming mentally strong. Joe said he’s proof that changing your mindset can result in a rippling body. In his fitness book, Evolution, Manganiello revealed that he was once a scrawny kid who was embarrassed after being unable to do a single pull-up during a high school fitness test.
That humiliating incident was a turning point in his life. “Failure became a huge part of my success story,” said Joe, who has overcome alcoholism and homelessness. “I’m glad I failed. I’m glad I felt that way and decided to do something about it.”
Manganiello maintains his chiseled body by doing CrossFit workouts with CrossFit coach Ron Mathews, who competed in the 2013 and 2014 CrossFit Games. Joe’s exercise routine typically includes Olympic-style weight lifting, lunges, box jumps and overhead push-presses, along with sprint-interval runs on the treadmill.
Paleo Diet, CrossFit Workouts and No Steroids
For diet, Manganiello follows a low-carb sugar-free Paleo-inspired diet. Joe typically eats five to six small meals a day featuring Paleo friendly foods such as eggs, chicken, salmon and leafy greens. “I don’t eat any sugar except for some fruit here and there,” he said. “So it’s no sugar, no bread, no real carbs all day.”
Joe’s daily menu looks like this:
- Breakfast at 7:15 am: Granola with Fage plain Greek yogurt and a glass of water with Gold Standard whey protein.
- Mid-morning snack at 9 am: Another protein drink.
- Second breakfast at 10:15 am: Egg-white omelet with ham, peppers and feta cheese, a small cup of fruit and black coffee with Splenda.
- Lunch at 2:15 pm: Two oven-roasted chicken breasts with corn and green beans, and six baked buffalo chicken wings with hot sauce.
- Dinner at 6:30 pm: Italian-style salmon with leafy green vegetables and a cup of coffee.
Manganiello looks like a professional athlete, but insists that unlike some actors who turn to steroids or performance-enhancing drugs to get ripped for action roles, he is 100 percent clean.
“I train like a pro athlete, not like an actor who’s just trying to look pretty,” Manganiello told ET (see video above). “I’m completely natural. No steroids, no human growth hormones. Ever.”
Joe echoed the sentiments of four-time CrossFit champ Rich Froning, who also said he does not take steroids or any performance-enhancing drugs. “I don’t take them,” said Froning. “I work my butt off.”
Manganiello is dating Sofia Vergara, who stays sexy with a low-carb, sugar-free diet, Pilates and weight lifting. Vergara joked that despite her bombshell good looks, she’s never afraid to look silly. “If you are afraid of not looking beautiful, you can’t be funny” said Sofia.
Joe is now training to reprise his role as a male stripper in “Magic Mike XXL.” “Magic Mike XXL,” which co-stars Channing Tatum, hits theaters in July 2015.
