Joelle Lockwood, the 30-year-old mother of two who was found after she had been missing for two months, was held captive in a cage by a couple in a trailer. She was rescued by a man who happened to visit the couple and who helped her escape. That man is talking today about what he believes the couple needed Joelle for, according to the Huffington Post on Sept. 9.
As the investigation progresses around this Posey County Indiana abduction, The county sheriff, Gregory Oeth, said “this looks more like there’s a sexual motive” when talking about the motive for keeping Joelle captive, according to NBC News Local. Ron Higgs, the man who helped Lockwood escape, believes Lockwood was held as a means for this couple to start a family.
The Evansville Police knew there was a good chance that Lockwood was in danger when she went missing two months ago, but they never expected such a bizarre ending to the case. Ricky House, 37, and Kendra Tooley, 41, were arrested for this horrific crime.
Higgs said Joelle was being held so House could impregnate her with his child. He has no children and he and his girlfriend wanted a baby. Tooley couldn’t have a baby said Higgs, who was once married to her. Higgs said that when he first told House that he wanted to take Lockwood with him he said “She’s not leaving until she has the baby.”
Higgs had offered to buy Lockwood to get her out of the house safely, but House was not letting her go. Higgs said, “The whole time during it all they was talking about a baby.” Higgs believes that once Lockwood became pregnant and had the baby, “we would never see her again.” It was when Higgs returned the next night that he was able to free Lockwood.
Police report that back in July, Joelle was offered a ride home by someone she was acquainted with, a man named Ricky House. That ride turned into two months of sheer horror for the mother of two. Instead of bringing Lockwood home as he offered, House made a stop at his trailer and asked Jolie to come in and meet his girlfriend. That meet and greet was the end of her freedom for the next 59 days.
The victim reports that House and his girlfriend Kendra Tooley, 44, used chloroform to knock her out and she woke up tied to a bed naked. She was given very little to eat and drink while being held captive at this trailer. She was originally kept on a chain with a dog collar around her neck then her kidnapper built a wooden cage which she was forced to stay in for long durations of time.
She was repeatedly raped, after being tied to the bed in an elaborate fashion that House had concocted. Tooley is also accused of raping her. She lived through a nightmare at the hands of the seemingly deranged couple.
Her rescue came when Tooley’s ex stopped by to visit, Ron Higgs. He saw Joelle and he said she begged him to help her. She told him she was being held against her will by both House and Tooley.
Higgs tried to buy Joelle’s freedom, but House refused. Higgs left and came back the next day to get her. When he tried to leave the trailer with Joelle, House confronted him with a shotgun and a fight ensued. Higgs escaped with Joelle. He drove her to Evansville and police were notified.
The SWAT team from Evansville Police Department along with law enforcement from the Posey County Sheriff’s Office went to House’s trailer and arrested the couple and search the premises. The couple is being held on numerous charges and will probably face years of jail if found guilty.
Higgs told police that he believed Joelle was taken and held just for the purpose of having a baby for this couple. He said:
“The whole time during it all they was talking about a baby. ‘She’s not leaving here until she has the baby. I’m not selling her, you’re not taking her, you’re not doing nothing.’ She told me Ricky was raping her, making her have oral sex. Kendra can’t have more children and Ricky doesn’t have any children of his own. I hate to say this to the public or even her even hearing it, but I think they were just going to have a baby and we would never see her again.”
Joelle looked to be in good physical health when rescued. Nothing was said about her emotional health, but you can just imagine what this woman endured at the hands of this couple.
