According to a June 29 report from Cleveland.com, John Cena won the WWE World Heavyweight Championship by reigning supreme in the WWE Money in the Bank ladder match for the vacant title belt. Cena, 37, was a heavy favorite heading into the match, and he came through in a big way by smashing through the likes of Randy Orton, Roman Reigns and Bray Wyatt.
Cena is no stranger to being a WWE champion, as his win at WWE Money in the Bank broke the record for most title reigns in promotion history. Cena is currently in his twelfth reign as WWE World Heavyweight Champion. Unfortunately for Cena fans, his current reign is expected to be a short one.
It’s widely expected that Cena will be putting his title on the line against Brock Lesnar, next month at SummerSlam. Since Lesnar is coming off his historic win over The Undertaker at Wrestlemania 30, he’ll be heavily favored to beat Cena at SummerSlam. Cena and Lesnar have wrestled each other only twice before, with the score tied at one apiece.
The Cena vs. Lesnar trilogy match will absolutely be a must watch for all hardcore and casual pro wrestling fans, as it’s the WWE’s top babyface against its top heel. No word yet on where Bryan fits in the title picture, but he’s still rehabbing from neck surgery and expected to be out for at least a few more weeks.
Elsewhere on the WWE Money in the Bank card, Seth Rollins won the ladder match for the Money in the Bank briefcase. That means he has exactly one year to challenge whoever the WWE Heavyweight Champion is, in a match for the title. Rollins has been getting a huge push from the WWE lately, so his win is no surprise. Rollins instantly became one of the WWE’s top villains when he broke up The Shield by smashing Roman Reigns with a steel chair a few weeks back.
In other WWE Money in the Bank action, Rusev continued his unbeaten streak by pinning Big E, and Paige successfully defended her WWE Divas championship. The one non-scheduled bout featured Adam Rose against Damien Sandow, and it was the former NXT star who won in devastating fashion. Also, Layla tapped out Summer Rae, with the help of guest ref, Fandango.
WWE Money in the Bank also featured two tag-team bouts, as The Usos defeated The Wyatt Family and the Goldust – Stardust tag-team edged Rybaxel. It’ll be interesting what the WWE does with The Usos in the months ahead, as it appears the Goldust and Stardust tag-team has gained on them in terms of crowd support. Perhaps a changing of the guard in the tag-team division is coming soon.
