The Doors’ John Densmore and Robby Krieger will appear on “Sonic Highways”, a forthcoming TV series and CD from the Foo Fighters to celebrate their 20th anniversary and eighth album as a band.
Dave Grohl wanted to do something different for the Foo Fighters eighth album that coincided with the 20th anniversary of the band. Grohl decided to record the album in different cities that have been influential in American music like Austin, Tex., Chicago, Ill., Nashville, Tenn., Seattle, Wash., New Orleans, La., New York, N.Y., Washington, D.C., and Los Angeles, Calif. Recording with other musicians highly associated with that city (it is assumed Krieger and Densmore represent Los Angeles).
The eight track CD will also feature rock/music legends such as Rick Nielsen of Cheap Trick on the opening cut “Something From Nothing”, as well as Joe Walsh, Joan Jett, and the New Orleans Preservation Jazz Hall Band. The CD was recorded from over a period of time stretching from September of 2013 through May of this year, and was produced by Butch Vig, who has overseen some very innovative rock projects over the years.
While the track listing has been released, there’s no indication of which tracks Krieger and Densmore appear on or the airing date for the episode they will appear in. Nor has it been revealed whether Krieger and Densmore recorded together or separately, as was done with the Skrillex collaboration “Breakin’ A Sweat”, but since the death of Ray Manzarek in May of 2013, there has been a rapprochement with Krieger and Densmore, who appeared together for the first time onstage in 13 years in honor of Jim Morrison’s 70th birthday last December.
The “Sonic Highways” TV series will premiere Oct. 17 on HBO. Check your local listings for airing dates and times. Each episode chronicles the recording in each city and was directed by Grohl. The CD Sonic Highways will be released on Nov. 10 and is available for pre-order at Amazon and iTunes. For more information on “Sonic Highways” the TV show or CD visit the Foo Fighters Facebook page.
