The play came from the pens of George S. Kauffman and Moss Hart who explored the chaos associated with multiple families living under one roof. The Sycamore, Vanderhof, Carmichael clans put the fun in dysfunctional with their madcap antics of candy making, ballet dancing, firework building, snake wrangling and xylophone playing. “You Can’t Take It With You” is a farcical comedy that proves you don’t have to be crazy to be happy, but it helps.
The play will be directed by 12th annual Roe Green Visiting Director Kathleen Conlin who has had a varied career holding such positions as professional stage director, casting director, associate artistic director, university administrator and award-winning professor.
Kathleen has served for twenty-two seasons as Associate Artistic Director and Casting Director for the Tony Award-winning Utah Shakespeare Festival where she also directed Shakespearean and other classic plays, contemporary plays, and a musical.
Conlin describes “You Can’t Take It With You” as a work that “touches the heart as well as the mind while celebrating an American family who open their door to the rich tapestry of ethnic diversity.” Conlin is also enjoying her time at Kent State and finds students’ “eagerness to grow and learn, while creating a satisfying theatrical production, inspiring.”
Joining Kathleen is the design team that includes dialect coaching by assistant professor Courtney Brown, scenic design by associate professor Steve Pauna, technical direction by Ryan Patterson, lighting design by Yu (Leo) Lei, costume design by Mackenzie Malone, and sound design by assistant professor Charles J. Korecki. Hannah Graham serves as production stage manager.
