Having lived through and participated in the protests against the Vietnam War, and the Iraq War, to hear war talk now just makes me sick. Seems obvious to me that killing more and more people, whatever label is attached to them, is not working.
My father who served in WWI, and as a Merchant Mariner in WWII, really believed his and his buddies sacrifices would mean the end of wars for all time. He also died thinking that because he stepped up to the plate, his family would never want for basic survival. He would be very sad if he knew that the world if still making and using increasing deadly weapons to kill other human beings to solve social problems.
What kind of example does this set for our children? For their children? For all the world’s children. Will we ever learn from our mistakes?
We call ourselves civilized, but to use killing routinely to solve disputes is barbaric! To ever evolve into civilized and humane beings, we must get past this thinking. Add into this mix obvious profit motives, for some, of never-ending war. This can not be the best we can pass on to our children. Do we think they don’t notice going from ‘don’t hit your brother’ to ‘here’s a gun, you can kill now?’
We must ask questions. Why do certain groups hate us so much? Once upon a time all our enemies were children. Who taught them to hate, and WHY? Our nation plays ‘whack-a-mole’ as each group pops up as the scariest terrorists of all time. It doesn’t work. Same hatred, different names, but are willing to kill and be killed. Our going to war just reenforces that killing is the way to create change.
What is the change that is needed? Why are families willing to give up their sons and daughters? What are the injustices they feel they face to make such sacrifice? Are those who we call enemies less than human beings? What motivates them?
We go on and on about our exceptionalism. Our great nation that believes in ‘all Created equal’ and ‘equal justice for all, under the law’ and of course ‘freedom’ … preaches to the world. Yet do we wonder why we are thought of as hypocrites, & murderers? Do we think why we have so much blood running in our own streets?
At some point, if we really do want a peaceful world, we must stop killing to solve human problems. We must stop killing to take resources. We must recognize our shared humanity, and start acting humane. It make take generations for the hate to wear off, but if it ever is to end, we must start to lead … by example.
