King Solomon’s Reef boasts an authentic, unpretentious atmosphere, serves up what is arguably the best comfort food Olympia has to offer, and employs some of the best Olympia natives.
The Reef is an Olympia favorite. Located downtown, The Reef has been plagued by a bit of bad luck over the years. To date, it has burnt down twice. That bad luck does not seem to have hurt business. Natives and tourists alike continue to visit this great dive.
Though it seems to be especially popular with the night crowd, The Reef appears to be busy all day, every day. The diner is often full of families, groups of friends, and students hoping to take advantage of the free coffee refills. The staff always seem to be in a great mood despite the seemingly near constant rush and will even sit down and talk to regulars when time permits.
Those who wish to avoid the crowded diner are welcome to order food and drinks in the lounge. The lounge is darker than the diner and manages to be at once both more intimate and more spacious, with large corner booths. Sitting in the lounge also grants customers access to larger bathrooms that do not require a key to enter.
The Reef offers a diverse menu that is friendly to vegetarians, vegans, and meat eaters that mostly consists of American cuisine. Their breakfast food is famous and, thankfully, it is served all day long. Try one of their breakfast burritos. Made with simple ingredients, it is both delicious and filling. They are just as large as the burritos served across the street at Quality Burrito, but less expensive. The chicken and waffles is another popular choice. Just make sure you come hungry. The Reef offers generous portions of everything the menu has to offer and would be happy to box up any leftovers.
The Reef is also known for their great milkshakes and fresh baked, locally made pies. If you happen to be sitting in the diner and hear what sounds like a dentist’s drill, you will know the staff is making someone a shake. The sound can be a little jarring, but it is worth it. If you order a milkshake from The Reef, they are going to give you a full glass with enough on the side for a refill. Customers can order the pie served warm or cold and, like everything else on the menu, can make it an order to go.
There are game tables in the diner and the lounge. The jukebox in the lounge offers a great variety of music and, if you know the right people, you can get songs played for free.
King Solomon’s Reef is especially friendly to local college students, offering free refills of coffee and soda and good, cheap food. Students are always welcome to come in and study, though it can get a bit hectic once the crowds show up. The downtown location is both a blessing and a curse. The restaurant is easy to find, but one may also find a dirty needle in the bathroom or in the nearby alleyways.
King Solomon’s Reef is open every day from 8:00 AM to 3:00 AM. Fans can visit the self-proclaimed “best diner in the galaxy” online at http://kingsolomonsreef.com/ for more information.
