According to CBS News on Friday, Kraft Foods Group has voluntarily recalled close to 8,000 cases of cheese. The company announced it was taking some packages of regular “Kraft American Singles Pasteurized Prepared Cheese Product” off the shelves. Four varieties of the cheese were affected because a supplier did not store an ingredient used for the cheese in compliance with temperature standards that might cause spoilage, according to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). As a result, some of the cheese could have spoiled and could may cause illness.
Kraft said the cheese was unlikely to cause food-borne illness, but the company decided to issue the recall just as a precaution. This might be an inconvenience because of the final barbecue of the summer even though Kraft has not received any reports of consumers sickened by the products.
USA Today reports that the recalled product was handled at Kraft’s manufacturing facility in Springfield, Missouri but it was distributed widely across the United States. Consumers are asked to check any cheese purchased that is labeled with “Best When Used By” dates of Feb. 20, 2015, and Feb. 21, 2015. The dates can be found at the bottom of the package. The cheese is not to be eaten. Instead return the cheese slices to the store where they were purchased for either an exchange or a refund.
Kraft Foods is considered one of the largest food producing companies in North America, but this is not the first time recalls have been issued. In fact, the company has issued several recalls this year. Kraft Foods recalled 1.77 million pounds of “Kraft Velveeta Cheesy Skillets,” last Jan. because they were reported to contain undisclosed allergens. The company also recalled 260 cases of Velveeta when the product was found to have insufficient levels of sorbic acid, which is used to prevent spoilage. In April, Kraft Foods also recalled 96,000 pounds of “Oscar Mayer Classic Wieners” because packages may have contained the company’s “Classic Cheese Dogs,” and could have contained dairy.
