For those adhering to the Paleo diet guidelines of avoiding grains and dairy while consuming only unprocessed foods, dining out and grocery-shopping are challenging. Kristin Cavallari summed up what it takes: “I’m a freak about what I put in my mouth,” she told E News on August 1. And she credits that attitude for helping her succeed with her weight loss goals.
As a result of being so diligent about her diet, she restored her pre-baby body in just 12 weeks. Now the mother of two, Kristin says that she is “constantly reading labels and I don’t eat any toxic chemicals.”
But Kristin also credits breastfeeding for helping her take the weight off so easily. And she’s aware of the role that her genes play in weight loss, reported Contact Music on August 2.
”I’m breast-feeding, which burns a ton of calories, and I can probably just thank my mama too, you know,” she said. Breast-feeding moms burn 300 to 500 calories per day, according to Tanya Zuckerbrot, M.S., R.D.
But when it comes to boosting post-pregnancy weight loss, breast-feeding only helps initially, Tanya told Women’s Health magazine. “A lot of women say it helps with a lot of the weight up front, but the last 10 pounds, if you’re breast-feeding, are very hard to lose,” she clarified.
And that’s precisely Kristin’s experience. “I’ve been working out really hard. Those last five pounds are really stubborn. It’s in your stomach,” Kristin said in a recent interview with Access Hollywood.
She’s careful about following the Paleo diet guideline of no dairy. “I stay away from dairy for the most part,” she added. “I think that is the number one weight gainer.”
Kristin includes Paleo-approved healthy fats and protein on her diet. “I put coconut oil in or on everything,” she told ABC News recently.
Also on the menu: Organic vegetables, chicken, fish and bison. “I also love avocados with olive oil and sea salt,” said Kristin.
If you want to try a Paleo diet for yourself, you’ll need to avoid grains as well as dairy. It’s the same approach recommended by celebrity trainer David Kirsch, whose clients range from Heidi Klum to Kate Upton.
David told Access Hollywood that his diet program features the “ABC’s—no Alcohol, Bread, or processed Carbs, and also no sugar.” The low carb diet that he recommends avoid processed food and includes “clean, lean protein, lots of salads and greens.”
And David agrees with the Paleo approach of no dairy and no starchy carbohydrates. Bread is “filled with empty carbs that spike your blood sugar, sending your body into fat storage mode and increasing your sensations of hunger. In short, bread is empty, wasted calories,” he said.
What’s wrong with dairy? “Many people don’t realize that dairy products contain high amounts of a sugar called lactose. Not only that, but most people are sensitive to this sugar and can’t digest it well,” resulting in bloating, he added.
