When is Labor Day in 2014 are many people asking as it is near the end of August. And, of course, after finding out that Labor Day is on Monday, the next question is are banks, the DMV, Costco, and post offices open or closed? According to The Telegraph report on Aug. 28, Labor Day is a bank holiday for the majority of banks in the United States, including Federal Reserve, Chase, Bank of America, and Wells-Fargo.
As reported by the 2014 Bank Holiday Schedule of Closings, “Banks are closed on Labor Day.” In addition to banks, financial markets are also closed on Monday.
Government offices on a federal, state, county, and city level are closed. This includes the DMV (Department of Motor Vehicle), Department of Family and Children Services, Social Security offices, and all courts and public libraries.
In regard to mail services, all U.S. post offices are closed and there is no mail delivery until Tuesday, Sept. 2. FEDEX and UPS will be closed on Monday. UPS Express Critical and FEDEX Custom Critical packages will be delivered.
Trash collection by public trash companies will be delayed by one day for the rest of the week. Private trash companies will follow their own schedule, so you might want to give them a call or check their website online.
Costco has six holidays on which the warehouse store is closed according to its Costco’s Hours and Holiday Closures website. One of those six days when Costco is closed includes Labor Day.
Labor Day in the United States is a holiday celebrated on the first Monday in September. Officially it is meant to celebrate the American labor movement and its workers. In Canada, it is called “Labour Day” and is also acknowledged on the first Monday in September. In many other countries, the day to celebrate workers occurs on May 1. Unofficially, Labor Day in the U.S. has become a symbolism for the end of summer, the beginning of school the day after Labor Day, and the beginning of the NFL and college football seasons.
As such, stores other than Costco (which actually does recognize and celebrate its workers), most other stores are open on Labor Day. Not only are stores like Target, Walmart, Sears, Lowe’s and Macy’s open, but they are also offering what are promised to be the best sales deals of the year. According to a CBS report, some of the special sales items include summer items such as bicycles, camping and hiking gear, patio furniture, and mattresses. “In fact Kiplinger’s says last year, Lowes, Target and Walmart took up to 75 percent off patio furniture over Labor Day and discounts look to be in the same range this year.
