If you simply focus on the water level statistics for California-based lakes and reservoirs, you may leave with the impression that the lingering drought has put the kibosh on any chances for a great fishing adventure. But experienced guides know otherwise, making them a particularly valuable resource for assessing the changing conditions for anglers throughout the state.
We’ve featured Lake Oroville in past postings. And there is much to recommend about this destination. Now, as in the past, we find the information that Ron Gandolfi of Gandolfi Bass Guide Services provides in his newsletter a invaluable resource for keeping tabs on ‘what’s hot and what’s not’ in this northern California fishing hole.
We opened Gandolfi’s email newsletter earlier this week with bated breath. expecting to read a grim report. Instead we were pleasantly surprised to read that this veteran guide is bullish about the current fishing conditions at Lake Oroville. With his consent, we are reprinting a portion of his latest newsletter here:
“Hi everyone, all I can say is this is the best Fall bite I have seen on Lake Oroville. We all know the lake is low and it is down from the last news letter. Now at about 240 feet below full pool, Lake Oroville has become a tremendous opportunity to catch many bass and now many large bass at this time of year. It is a great combination.
Many of the structures that are always under water are now visible and make for an interesting day on the water as well as a view of the past. Many roads and foundations of the past are showing up and you can’t help but wonder how it was before the lake was formed.
We have had so many great tips this last month. Most of the trips have averaged from 50-75 bass per 1/2 day and up to 100 plus on a full day. We have had some terrific days of top water bites with Persuader Walking Poppers and also Persuaders Buzz Baits. These baits were just featured in the last “Fish Sniffer Magazine” written by Mark Fong with me on Lake Oroville.
Also getting many bites has been the drop-shot, tubes, worms, and jigs. The reaction bite has also been through the roof!! One trip last week we had 100 bass just on reaction baits. From top water to with Persuader Baits to Persuaders Image Blade Spinner Bait, and crank baits and lipless crank baits. It was a wild day with double hook ups all day.”
