People stay at a bad job for numerous reasons, the bad economy, and the close proximity to home or even flexible hours. Working at a bad job can cause an unhappy work; loyalty does not always bring the best results for a career. The most important aspect to remember while working in a less than desirable work situation is to leave the work at the office or business.
Many employees will dwell on the work situation especially in a small business where family members often get better treatment than other employees. The best any employee can do in these types of situations is to do the work while on the clock and then go home. While not on the clock, there are options that can be utilized to help relieve the stress of the current work situation; the options may even lead to a new career.
If the business has numerous departments, make connections and introductions to new people. An unexpected job offer may come from one of these new network connections. Co-workers in other departments can see potential that may not be viewed by others.
The same goes for employees who work for small businesses or family businesses, make connections outside of the workplace. Attending community events is a great way to meet new people. New connections may bring new work opportunities.
Volunteering can be the best way to forget about the current job situation as well as to help others. Volunteering does not have to be a huge commitment, volunteer a couple hours a week or even a couple hours a month. By volunteering, people expand their social network which can be useful in job searches. Volunteer makes most people feel good by helping others. Many times, volunteer positions turn into full time job offers.
While the current job situation may make the best employees miserable, learn to work away from the job. Try freelancing. Numerous job opportunities such as childcare, content writing, blogging, photography, or consulting can begin in the freelance market. By freelancing, opportunities may open up to work full time. The extra work and networking from freelancing will help in worrying less about the current bad job.
Take a Class
The class can be as formal as a college business course or as simple as a cake decorating class at the local community center. By taking classes, people expand their knowledge base. A simple cake decorating class at the community center may turn into a full time business. Decorating wedding cakes or birthday cakes can be a lucrative business.
College courses can help a person meet new people. Connections are important. A college professor who sees potential in a student will write a recommendation which could lead to a new job or career. Many times the smallest connections can have the biggest impact.
Learn to Laugh
Getting angry does not help the bad job situation. Learn to laugh at the work place at the end of day especially on the drive home with the music turned up loudly. Doing the best at the job is critical especially for advancement or references down the road. But taking the bad work environment too seriously will not help anyone.
In almost every career, people experience a bad work environment. Often the work environment does not seem to be that bad until after the employee has moved on to a new job. Learning to leave the stress of a bad job at the workplace is critical in maintaining a healthy outlook. Later down the road, the experiences of a miserable work environment will help in finding a better job, career, or new connections.
