LeSean McCoy’s tip? Twenty cents. As in two dimes. The Philadelphia Eagle running back, nicknamed “Shady,” made a stop at a Philly beer and burger locale on Monday called PYT, had an in-house meal that topped off at $61.56, and penciled in a little extra for the server – to the tune of “$00.20.” The tightfisted tipper’s parsimonious offering instantly hit headline gossip.
Writes Fox Sports: “Philadelphia Eagles running back LeSean McCoy, if the allegations made in a Philly Mag report prove accurate, has joined the considerable ranks of rich professional athletes whose name has become synonymous with being super-cheap, thanks to his alleged tipping habits at a Philadelphia burger joint.”
According to EaglesCap.com, McCoy signed a 5-year, $45 million extension during the 2012 off-season, including a signing bonus of $8 million prorated over the contract life. With an annual average salary of $9 million, McCoy brings down over $500K per game. Or, if you prefer, the dude makes about $17.11 per minute, for one year. Just sayin.
The receipt was originally posted to the restaurant’s Facebook page. While this may be a case of simple crappy service – if the service was slip-shod sloppy then it matters not that the customer’s annual yield is big time bucks – it appears that McCoy was trying to send a message.
That message being: Either the NFL pro is totally befuddled by decimal points and is confusing his two-dime duo with the customary 20 percent tip rate, or he’s sending a deliberate message to PYT’s owner and staff.
Looks like the latter is making a go. McCoy has yet to respond, but PYT’s owner is making a bit of a hullabaloo, saying that the 26-year-old University of Pittsburgh product received “excellent” and “impeccable service,” but that he and his group “were verbally abusive … in the most insulting ways” to the wait staff.
Says PYT’s owner Tommy Up on FB:
The derogatory statements about women and their sheer contempt for the staff serving them wasn’t the end, however. After Mr. McCoy and his group left I looked over and saw their server, my friend, with his head bowed down and with a very confused look on his face. I took the receipt out of his hand and I couldn’t believe that anyone could be so callous. Mr. McCoy had left a .3% tip for our staff. Our staff that was beyond excited to see him walk into our burger joint and was excited to serve him. That’s twenty cents on a tab of over $60. Twenty cents that our server has to split with the food runner and the bartender. Two dimes from an insulting multimillionaire.
PYT employee Rob Knelly, who was McCoy’s server on Monday, corroborated the owner’s comments:
“As soon as they sat down, they were pretty rude,” Knelly said. “I asked some questions, they weren’t really responsive. They were cursing, making derogatory comments. I put their order in and forgot one of their appetizers, which I apologized for. They ordered things, and once they got it, said ‘We ain’t eating this (bleep)! We don’t want it.’ ”
