Performing for over 140 years, it’s hard to imagine how a circus show can stay fresh and current with the times, still, the folks of the Ringling Bros. & Barnum & Bailey Circus manage to do so every year bringing delight to “children of all ages.” This isn’t to say that they don’t recycle acts from year to year as well. Everyone has their favorite acts, but still they manage to change them up.
One of this year’s headlining acts in the new “Super Circus Heroes” performances is Mr. Boredom. Boredom, AKA Davis Vassallo, is a fourth-generation circus performer. He didn’t need to run away to the circus – he was literally born into an Italian circus family. The Vassallo family would perform in England, Germany and Russia with Davis studying the skills of each of the family performers including acrobats, gymnasts, aerialists, animal trainers and high wire walkers. Davis’ grandfather would give him the following advice: “The first thing you must learn is to learn everything.”
By the age of seven, Davis was already performing professionally. Davis learned that he had a natural ability to make people laugh and with the help of his father, created a clowning act with skills he learned from the family. By the time he was 15, he and his father toured as a father/son comedy team in circuses in Norway, Germany and Italy. He eventually broke out into his own solo act.
Vassallo has followed the family tradition marrying Marina, another circus performer. Together, they travel around the world with their three and a half year old daughter, Adriana. He was eventually discovered by a U.S. circus scout. “For circus performers, Ringling Bros.® is the top of the ladder, the most famous circus in the world. What artist does not dream of working in the largest circus in the world?” says Vassallo. “Even as a child I looked at the photos and videos of Ringling, and I never thought one day I would be here. I know that I will have to work hard. I want to improve as an artist in America, and I think I have a great opportunity to do so!”
This year marks the U. S. debut for Vassallo who will be joining a very talented crew including The Lopez Family (high wire and motorcycle globe acts), Cathy & Brett Carden (animal trainers), The Lightning Rods (hand-balancing), Clown Alley, The Shaolin Warriors, the Twin Titans and Cuban Comets!
The Ringling Bros & Barnum & Baily Circus will be performing at both the Everett Comcast Arena and the Kent ShoWare Center. Each performance includes admission to the All Access Pre-Show Super-hero Party down on the arena floor one hour before the show begins. Children and adults can learn the art of clowning, try on some costumes and learn skills like balancing, juggling, wire walking and martial arts.
