The theme for this month’s Loot Crate, a monthly subscription for geeks and gamers, was Transform! At $18/month each crate has something new and different. One of the items in the box is the Major League Gaming (MLG) Starter Kit. My whole family was unimpressed with this kit. Here’s more about MLG:
Major League Gaming (MLG) is the global leader in eSports. The company operates MLG.tv, the #1 online broadcast network for professional level competitive gaming; the MLG Pro Circuit, the longest-running eSports league in North America; and MLG: Play, the largest cross platform online gaming tournament system with 9 million registered users across the globe. MLG is one of the fastest growing digital networks worldwide with over 600% growth in audience over the last three years and 1557% growth in online video consumption over the last four years. Each month, the company reaches millions of highly-engaged fans via web, mobile, connected TVs and gaming consoles making it the definitive property for major advertisers to reach young men (90% male, 50% 16-34 year olds, 76% 21+, and over 40% HHI $100k+). For more information: www.mlg.tv.
MLG is a big deal. A really big deal. TV-levels of big deal. IHS reports:
In 2013, esports video consumption reached 2.4 billion hours, almost double the levels in 2012. Esports generated just over $32.8 million in online advertising revenue in 2013, and is set to grow by over 250% by 2018 as programmatic advertising, new regions and new platforms make their presence felt.
The most popular games in 2013 were Riot Games’ League of Legends. The next biggest titles are Valve’s Dota 2 and Activision Blizzard’s StarCraft II.
So what do you get from Loot Crate? Some team stickers you might not have heard of if you’re not a MLG member, and…$5 off a subscription to MLG. Mind you, there’s nothing wrong with this kind of offer, except that it 1) has nothing to do with the theme of “transform,” and 2) it’s a subscription service that automatically renews:
Get one month of GameBattles Premium Access and take your competitive online experience to the next level. Get premium support, the option to save your match settings, and more. This is a recurring 1-month membership.
To be clear, this means that Loot Crate is asking you to sign up for ANOTHER subscription service that automatically renews. So yes, you can get your access for free for one month, but then you need to cancel it. Where have I heard that before? Oh right, from Loot Crate.
We rated this a 1 (“Nope, fail”). Sorry guys, I realize that you need sponsors, but if the theme was even marginally related to Transformers it would have earned a higher rating.
