Every once in a great while a bar or restaurant will pop up that fills a real need. This is encouraging to see since Sacramento has lost so many special places in the past few years. Lowbrau opened in late 2012 and has been the cure for what ails Sacramento locals ever since.
Now just to be clear, there are many reasons why Lowbrau has seen and will continue to see success. In short, this means they are well deserving of the high praise they are about to receive. Let’s start with the basics: Lowbrau sits on a great piece of midtown real estate which sees a tremendous amount of foot traffic. But, as past business owners at this address will tell you- a great location alone does not a success make.
The restaurant menu is made up of fresh, true to form items consisting of some of the best sausage available in Sacramento. It’s not all about sausages though, although they are the stars of the show, if you are a fan of brunch, Lowbrau has some unique and filling items for you to check out. I would get into more detail as to the items but will instead just say, get there.
Moving on to the beer- the list contains what I believe to be one of the largest selections of German beers available locally, the other being found at Der Bier Garten. Regardless of the style of beer you’re into, you can find it here. Not to mention- the obscure, specialty beers available for your consumption. Some of the beers are a bit on the pricey side but they are there for you, or not. As any true lover of craft beer will tell you, a good brew is worth more than a few bucks. With Sacramento being a city in love with local brews, Lowbrau is one of the cool kids when it comes to craft beer.
The bar has an impressive and creative list of cocktails. One might not think of a place like Lowbrau for craft cocktails but that would be a mistake. All of the usual suspects can be found at Lowbrau much like any other bar in town, but beyond that you will find a wonderful mixture of cocktails with vibrant colors and original flavors. The bar also does a great job of putting a twist on some old familiar favorites. As you read and taste your way through the cocktail list you’ll see the items are all put together with a touch a class.
This article would not be complete if there wasn’t a mention of the two guys behind the bar who did more than take great care of my wife and I during our last visit. Matt Heard and Patrick Shelley took turns talking to us, making our drinks and creating an overall unique experience for us. The attitudes were laid back and the enthusiasm for what they do was both abundant and genuine. Here’s the thing- Sacramento isn’t a place where the community craves those who serve us to be pretentious yes men. For this reason, guys like Matt and Patrick are superstars. They were both really engaging and had real conversations with us, not programmed, scripted responses to our questions and comments. Matt and Patrick were also really skilled at taking an idea and turning that idea into a delicious adult beverage. Time after time, we told them what we liked and they came back with something delicious and refreshing, all we had to do was put our faith in them, and that folks, creates the ultimate guest experience.
The last piece that makes Lowbrau the real deal is simply how it has been received by the community as a whole. People gather here in large numbers and treat it like their favorite little local bar because it is. The best part is, none of the above components are any kind of secret, it’s all just very well executed which means Lowbrau is here to stay.
