Lyman Orchards is located at in Middlefield, Connecticut has pick your own strawberries from June thru July. The orchard grows many different types. They also sell strawberries in the Apple Barrel store for those that don’t want to pick their own just buy them. The season for picking strawberries is June through early July. They are a great source of Vitamin C and low in calories.

Berries should be firm to the touch and not mushy. When taking home protect from direct sunlight and store in refrigerator. Eat quickly because they do not last long. When picking your own berries dress in comfortable lightweight clothing. Wear a hat on your head for protection from the sun.

Strawberry Parafit Pie
1 package of strawberry jello
1/1/4 cups of strawberry juice
1 pint of vanilla ice cream
1 large container of fresh strawberries sliced
1 9 inch pie shell baked
In a medium 2 quart sauce pan combine the jello mixture, cups of water called on package, and strawberry juice. Bring to a slow boil over medium heat. Spoon the ice cream into the mixture in large spoonfuls. Let it melt and stir constantly. Put mixture into large plastic bowl and put in freezer for about 30 minutes. Let it set but do not freeze it.
Bake pie shell according to package direction and let cool.Wash and drain the strawberries. Remove the green tops and discard. Slice thin and keep some aside for garnish. Take jello ice cream mixture out of freezer and fold in sliced strawberries. Add this mixture to the cooled baked pie shell. Garnish top with sliced strawberries
Cover pie and freezer for about 1 hour or more in freezer. Take out and cut into pie wedges serve with whipped cream.
