Whenever a modern continuation or remake comes to pass on beloved movie franchises, we have to assume that it’s not going to live up to the original. But as the newest installment in the masterpiece series by George Miller, Mad Max: Fury Road, made its trailer debut at Comic Con yesterday, geeks everywhere lit up with excitement. The Australian dystopian action film was a smash hit when it first debuted in 1979, becoming the Guinness World Record holder for most profitable film, and heralded the dawn of the global market for Australian New Wave films.
History lesson aside, what about the trailer excites us? The intensity? Tom Hardy’s immersion into the role of the title character? How about the gritty and dusty way the movie shows the reality of the world in ways that pale even the amazing quality of its predecessors? All of the above.
First of all, the film has amazing potential even before you see the trailer, Tom Hardy, Charlize Theron, Nicholas Holt, Zoe Kravits, Courtney Eaton, Riley Keough and many more pan the all-star cast. With star-studded potential like this, a movie often falls flat; lacking actual development in the plot and suffering from insufferable problems with pacing. In the case of Mad Max it seems to be a good thing. It features a lot of Australian actors and actresses getting their big film debut, and that gives credence to its faithful continuation of the series.
After sitting in “development hell” for years, this movie is one whose time has absolutely come. And the powerful intensity of the trailer will excite audiences everywhere. George Miller himself called it “basically a Western on wheels” during a press conference as reported by Entertainment Weekly. Following with: “We decided to literally do every car that’s smashed is smashed, every stunt is a real human being, even the actors do a lot of their own stunts, and so on.”
Over the next couple of years, fans are getting hit with a one-two-punch of hotly anticipated films. Age Of Ultron, Batman Vs. Superman: Dawn Of Justice, The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies, Sin City: A Dame To Kill For, and finally this; Mad Max: Fury Road.
Whether it will be a box office success is irrelevant. It’s predecessors have already proven that it has much more than just a cult following, and the explosive reaction at Comic Con yesterday has further proven that there are dedicated fans looking forward to this film. Maybe it’s not important that film does well in the box office, but we’re sure stoked to see how it sits with the fans when it finally hits theaters next year.
