According to a report from CSNNE on August 27th and Lakehead University on August 15th, Scott Morrison will take over the head coaching job for the Maine Red Claws, NBADL affiliate of the Boston Celtics, after serving as a player development coach alongside Jim Moran during the 2013-14 season. This promotion is also announced on Morrison’s Twitter feed. The Maine Red Claws and Boston Celtics have yet to make an official announcement.
In addition to player development, Morrison was also a scout for the Boston Celtics and has been with the Red Claws’ parent club preparing for their upcoming NBA training camp along with 2013-14 Red Claws assistant coach Ronald Nored. He also took a moment out of his preparations to participate in the ALS Ice Bucket challenge, where he called out Red Claws assistant coach Cam Twiss before his icy shower.
Morrison, who also served as the head coach of the Lakehead University Thunderwolves for 10 seasons, will be following in the footsteps of predecessor Mike Taylor, who coached the Red Claws for two seasons from 2012-2014. Under Taylor’s guidance, the Red Claws earned the franchise’s only playoff berth, finishing with the eight seed in the 2012-13 season. Taylor guided the team to a 26-24 record and sent two players to the NBA that season. In his second season, Taylor got off to a hot start, with the team scoring in bunches behind the hot duo of returning players Jermaine Taylor (no relation) and Chris Wright. However, and injury to Taylor in the second game, an injury to rookie scoring and defensive threat Romero Osby and the loss of Wright and Chris Babb to NBA call-ups derailed the Red Claws bid for a return trip to the postseason, as the team finished 19-31. Taylor’s 45 wins ties him with Austin Ainge for the most wins by a Red Claws coach. After the 2013-14 season, Taylor traveled to Europe to coach the Polish National Team as they compete in the Eurobasket 2015 qualifying tournament.
It should be noted that Morrison’s contributions as a player development coach had an impact on Wright and Babb’s NBA promotions, as well as the rise of rookie Frank Gaines, who won the NBADL Most Improved Player award for 2013-14, as well as being in the conversation for NBADL Rookie of the Year.
As of press time, Morrison was unavailable for comment. The Red Claws have also declined comment, stating that team personnel decisions are made by the Boston Celtics and that any official statement will come from their office first.
