“Bill” fields quite a few questions pertaining to the changes made in the US model CA72-CA77 250-305cc Dream models. In the broad view, there are “early” and “late” style machines, featuring design and styling changes in the fuel tank, handlebar controls and rear luggage carrier parts. Bikes made up into the 1966 model year carried a tall, narrow battery which was changed out to the more readily available 12N9-3A types. Many battery manufacturers have incorrect information listings for this battery change, so in many cases the wrong battery is ordered for the machine… then I get a call that goes like, “Bill, I ordered a battery for my Honda 305 Dream and it doesn’t fit. What do I do now?”
Here is a fairly complete listing of the changes that were made to the US-spec Honda 250-305 Dreams:
Frame numbers changed in 1963 from “early” to “late” style frames and fuel tank designs.
“Late” CA72-78 models have different fuel tank, side covers, knee pads and tank badges, along with extended luggage rack trim pieces, which incorporated the mounts for turn signals used on non-US models.
“Late-style” frames began at CA72-311111 and after CA77-314731. A second change occurred at CA72-1000331 and CA78-1010863 when the battery type was changed to 12N9-3A.
