A 31-year-old man’s HIV infection was knowingly spread to a 15-year-old teen. The man, Matthew Louis Reese, had a seven-month relationship with the teen, taking her virginity and infecting the victim with the HIV virus. The two reportedly met in December of 2012 when the teen called a chat line, and their first sexual encounter came a few months later at a Garland movie theater in the Dallas – Fort Worth area.
Reese was sentenced to spend the next 95 years of his life behind bars after Judge Pat McDowell added another two decades to what already had amounted to a life sentence. According to CBS News, on Tuesday Reese pleaded guilty to three charges – aggravated sexual assault of a child with a deadly weapon, which carried a 55-year jail term, aggravated sexual assault with serious bodily injury and sexual assault of a child, which each carry an additional 20 years.
Testimony heard this week in the sordid case included a string of witnesses who were harmed by the degenerate. Reese, who learned of his HIV positive status in 2006, is a father of three. Two of the women with whom he has children with testified against Reese in two-day testimony this week. Reese’s victim, who is not being named because of her minor status, also took the stand and spoke of their unprotected sex. The victim’s mother also testified, saying Reese claimed he was only 18 years of age when he met the woman’s daughter.
A fifth witness was called to testify – a male inmate at the Dallas County Jail. Explains the Dallas News:
A 40-year-old male inmate also testified that he had consensual, unprotected sex with Reese in the Dallas County Jail after Reese’s arrest last year. He said Reese did not tell him about his HIV status. Had he known, the inmate said, he would not have had sex with Reese. The man, who the judge and prosecutor asked not be identified, has two pending felony theft charges for stealing clothes. He said he found out from another inmate about Reese’s HIV status.
“I don’t believe it’s right what he did,” the man, a married father of two, said. “He should have told me he was HIV-positive.” The pair were found in a bunk together in a Dallas area jail.
Reports AllVoices.com: “The girl was initially fine during their relationship but it was after, when her lover was sent to jail on drug charges, that she was diagnosed with Aids. Even she being hospitalized and he being in the prison, the two continued to talk and exchange letters. The girl became so sick that she went into coma for nearly two weeks and spent 40 days in the hospital.”
Defense attorney Allan Fishburn had asked for Reese’s sentences to be served concurrently. “Yes, he committed statutory rape, he had AIDS or was at least HIV-positive, and he didn’t tell her — that’s why we got 55 years,” Fishburn said, adding that even with the 55-year sentence, Reese will be 81 before he’s eligible for parole.
Prosecutor Soni Lewis said Reese should never be set free.
“The only person he cares about is himself,” Lewis said in her closing arguments. “And because of that, this defendant needs to go away for as long as the law allows, not because of the type of person he is, but because the community needs to be protected from Matthew Louis Reese.”
Judge McDowell ruled in favor of the prosecutors and issued a stacked sentence of 95 years behind bars.
