Marcia Clark—yup, that Marcia Clark—is headed back to Connecticut.
Next Thursday, July 10th, the former prosecutor-turned-critically acclaimed crime novelist will celebrate the release of her new thriller, The Competition (Mulholland Books, $26.00), with a launch party at the Fairfield Antique & Design Center in Norwalk. This event will be hosted by Ladies Who Launch and Over 40 Females, who delivered a sell-out crowd for Clark last year. Tickets are currently available for purchase—and are expected to go fast. (See event details below.)
Clark, who joined the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office in 1981 and spent ten years in the elite Special Trials Unit, where she prosecuted a number of high profile cases—including that of Robert Bardo, whose conviction for the murder of actress Rebecca Schaeffer resulted in legislation that offered victims better protection from stalkers as well as increased punishment for the offenders—rose to prominence during the criminal trial of O.J. Simpson.
She resigned her position in 1997 and published a memoir, Without a Doubt, which reached #1 on the New York Times, Wall St. Journal, Washington Post, LA Times and Publishers Weekly bestsellers lists. Clark remains a legal analyst and expert commentator for television and radio, and continues to practice appellate law.
Clark made her debut as a novelist with Guilt by Association in 2011; that book was a national bestseller and received a Nero (Wolfe) Award nomination. Guilt by Degrees (2012) and Killer Ambition (2013) followed, earning her fans among genre heavyweights. James Patterson enthused, “It’s no big surprise that Marcia Clark knows her way around a courtroom, and a murder mystery—but she’s also a terrific writer and storyteller.” Further, Joseph Finder hailed protagonist Rachel Knight as “smart, funny, and just about fearless in her pursuit of justice and a good martini.”
Kathy McShane, Managing Director of Ladies Who Launch Connecticut, tells HBE, “I ask women who have had challenges in their lives to come and speak to my ladies. It’s great for them to see that we can reinvent ourselves and move on to achieve wonderful things. Marcia Clark is the poster child for facing adversity head on and coming out ahead.”
Clark was equally effusive in her enthusiasm: “I’m honored and delighted to be invited back by the Ladies Who Launch. This is one fabulous group of women! Can’t wait to see you all!”
The Competition is Clark’s fourth novel to feature Knight and her gal pal, Detective Bailey Keller, and centers around a tragic Columbine-like school shooting. Booklist awarded the title a starred review, noting, “Clark handles sometimes painfully raw scenes with great sensitivity and skillfully works in material about what makes a mass murderer, as she ratchets up suspense to a deadly conclusion … another tour de force.” Further, Publishers Weekly praised, “The twisty plot and dynamic duo make for a suspenseful, if sobering, page-turner.”
Marcia Clark will appear at the Fairfield Antique & Design Center of Thursday, July 10th, from 6 to 8 PM. Tickets are $25/person and can be purchased online; registration is free for Ladies Who Launch Platinum Members and Over 40 Females members. Copies of The Competition will be available for purchase/signing at the event. Location: 19 Willard Rd. in Norwalk.
