Get ready for a big bang in Marina del Rey on 4th of July. Fireworks are slated to explode on Friday, July 4, 2014 around 9 p.m. from a floating barge in the waters of the main channel between Fisherman’s Village and the ocean entrance to the harbor. Pack a picnic, and bring friends to ooh and aah at the spectacular free fireworks, which last about 20 minutes. To celebrate, the Marina del Rey Visitors Center at the corner of Mindanao and Admiralty will give away festive goodies such as complimentary flags to the first 500 visitors, red and blue bead necklaces, and patriotic pinwheels starting at 10 a.m.
Provided it’s a clear evening, the fireworks can usually be seen throughout the marina and from the waterfront side of most hotels, restaurants, beaches, apartments and anchorages. Sometimes it’s possible to get a glimpse of the colorful show from as far away as Playa del Rey and Venice Beach Pier. Be forewarned, unexpected cloud cover can dampen or obscure this phenomenal pyrotechnic display.
Popular places to view the show include Burton W. Chace Park at 13650 Mindanao Way, where the fireworks are choreographed to patriotic music, which will be broadcast in sync over FM radio station, 88.9, KXLU. Other great spots to gaze at the dazzling display are Fisherman’s Village at 13755 Fiji Way and Marina Beach, also known as Mother’s Beach, at 4101 Admiralty Way.
The secret is to arrive early. Parking lots fill up before 6 p.m. on Independence Day, and there is no on-street parking inside Marina del Rey. Street closures begin as early as 1 p.m., and traffic can be a nightmare. Plan ahead for the best experience, or spend the night with a friend who lives along the water.
Have a blast!
