There’s only one Martha Stewart, and Martha Stewart wants the world to know it. The 73-year-old lifestyle guru just threw major shade at wannabe expert Gwyneth Paltrow, according to Fox News on Saturday. In an interview with Net-a-Porte’s print magazine, Stewart reportedly slammed the Oscar winning actress, saying, “She just needs to be quiet. She’s a movie star. If she were confident in her acting, she wouldn’t be trying to be Martha Stewart.”
Stewart wasn’t quite as harsh when she gave her two cents on Paltrow’s domestic endeavors last year during an appearance on Bloomberg Television, but she wasn’t exactly welcoming, either. At the time she said, “I haven’t eaten at Gwyneth’s house, and I have never seen how she lives, but if she’s authentic, all the better – and I certainly hope she is. She really wants to be part of the lifestyle business.”
“She’s a charming, pretty person who has a feeling for lifestyle,” Stewart acknowledged. “She wants to be a lifestyle arbiter – fine. Good.” But Stewart was quick to note, “I think I started this whole category of lifestyle.”
Of course, there’s no stopping Paltrow. The polarizing A-lister spoke to E! News about her plans for this year after her split with husband Chris Martin, revealing that she has a rule that she will only shoot one movie a year (and she’s done that already, shooting “Mortdecai” with Johnny Depp), so now she’ll have plenty of time to focus on raising her kids and developing material for Goop, her online lifestyle publication.
But even if she can keep Paltrow from taking a bigger piece of her lifestyle pie, Stewart may have to worry about another blonde up and comer. In August, Stewart told The Huffington Post she was confused as to why her friend and neighbor Blake Lively, who launched her buzzy lifestyle site, Preserve, earlier this year, was trading in her acting career for a new lifestyle business. “I mean, it’s stupid, she could be an actress! Why would you want to be me if you could be an actress?” Stewart scoffed.
Lively later said she wants to do both. “I want to have my own path professionally and even as she said, I’m an actress. I’m doing something totally different so now I sort of have two careers going on and it’ll be interesting to see how it all pans out,” the “Gossip Girl” alum told E! News. “But really what it is, is I have two passions. And I think ultimately, I will always be doing both, but one is going to be paying the bills better than the other.”
But Lively also gave props to the woman who started it all. “Who doesn’t want to be Martha Stewart?” she said. “Martha Stewart has been a huge inspiration to me my entire life … I always say that Martha Stewart Living is the only magazine I ever had growing up. I never had Tiger Beat or any of that stuff.”
