Sources say Melissa Rivers will sue the New York clinic in Manhattan where her mother Joan Rivers suffered cardiac arrest last month. The news of Rivers’ potential negligence and wrongful death suit comes on the heels of the clinic, the Yorkville Endoscopy, being found deficient by an ambulatory accreditation oversight group.
Writes RadarOnline: “Melissa Rivers is preparing to sue Yorkville Endoscopy, Dr. Lawrence Cohen and a female ear, nose and throat doctor, for the death of her mother, Joan Rivers, as staff members of the clinic told medical investigators about a bombshell event that took place during the procedure that wasn’t medically related.”
According to the site, a source said: “It’s become very clear to Melissa and experts she has spoken to that her mother didn’t have to die. This was a routine endoscopy that went wrong. Melissa has also been told that staff members at Yorkville Endcoscopy revealed a shocking detail to medical investigators looking into Joan’s death — something occurred during the procedure that wasn’t medically related.”
Melissa will await the outcome of the official medical investigation and then absolutely file the lawsuits.
The site did not report on what this “shocking detail” was, though the source allegedly said it was “related to Joan’s personal ear, nose and throat doctor and it wasn’t about the unplanned biopsy she did.”
Some media outlets have reported the name of Joan’s personal ear, nose and throat physician – Dr. Gwen Korovin – and are advising that Korovin snapped a selfie with Ms. Rivers while she was under anesthesia. Perhaps this is the bit of “bombshell” news that Radar Online intimated?
CNN initially reported on Sept. 16 that Korovin took the selfie; workers at the clinic claimed they overheard the doctor allude to the comedic picture, saying that Rivers would “think this is funny” or would “love this.”
However, CNN is now reporting today that Dr. Korovin denies “performing an unauthorized procedure” before Rivers went into cardiac arrest, and furthermore “categorically denies” she ever took a selfie.
Dr. Cohen resigned shortly after the August 28 incident occurred with the 81-year-old Rivers. Sources say Dr. Cohen, who had been Rivers’ personal specialist for decades, allowed an “unauthorized doctor to perform an unauthorized procedure.”
During the procedure, Rivers stopped breathing, went into cardiac arrest, and died a week later at Mount Sinai hospital.
According to a separate CNN report, the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities “sent representatives for an unscheduled visit to the clinic after hearing about Rivers’ cardiac arrest,” who determined that “deficiencies” were found and thereafter placed the clinic in “immediate jeopardy.” The investigators recommended the clinic stop procedures and surgeries “until accreditation questions are settled.”
However, the clinic remains open for business this week, issuing a statement that read:
“Yorkville Endoscopy continues to maintain its federal, state and Quad A (AAAASF) authorization to be operational and provide patient care. Yorkville Endoscopy is committed to adhering to the standards established by Quad A (AAASF).”
Rivers was accompanied to her appointment by Dr. Korovin, who went with Rivers with the intention of finding out why the comedian had been suffering from a consistently sore and hoarse throat.
CNN picks up the story:
The doctor was only authorized to observe while another doctor, gastroenterologist Dr. Lawrence Cohen, performed the endoscopy, which involved using a flexible camera to examine down her throat, the source said.
After Cohen, the clinic’s medical director, finished his work, the unauthorized doctor began a biopsy on Rivers, according to the source.
Investigators believe that Rivers’ vocal cords began to swell during the allegedly unauthorized biopsy, cutting off the flow of oxygen to her lungs, which led to cardiac arrest on the morning of August 29, the source said.
Melissa Rivers, in an online post this week, issued a public message of thanks and support.
As my son Cooper and I mourn the loss of my mother, we want to thank everyone for the beautiful cards and flowers conveying heartfelt messages and condolences, which continue to arrive from around the world and through social media. My mother would have been overwhelmed by the scope and depth of the love that people have expressed for her. It is certainly helping to lift our spirits during this time. We are forever grateful for your kindness and support in continuing to honor my mother’s legacy, and for remembering the joy and laughter that she brought to so many.
In the latest CNN update however that posted today, a new story is shaping, one that would seem to fall in line with the fact that the endoscopy clinic has consistently denied that a biopsy was ever performed. According to the site, Dr. Korovin performed the initial laryngoscopy, an exam used to view a patient’s vocal folds and glottis. Gastroenterologist Dr. Cohen then performed the endoscopy, “detected something of concern,” at which point Dr. Korovin “began a second laryngoscopy to again view River’s vocal cords, the source said. It was at that time that her vocal cords began to swell, leading to a cutoff of oxygen to her lungs and ultimately to cardiac arrest, according to the source.”
